While I was fishing today, my reel all of a sudden didn't feel right. Took a close look and I saw that that I had line behind the spool on the handle side. I checked to see if I had side to side play in the spool....no, just a gap.I tried tightening the tension knob,but that was just making the gap wider. What's going on? By the way, it's a Core 100mg.

Yes, I turned it both ways to see if I could see a difference. Loosen it, nothing happened. Tighten it, the gap gets wider.

sounds like a loose side plate.  I had this issue with a different reel and tightening the reel made things worse.  I ran the side plate screws down and things were back to normal.

stop dropping your reels on the ground butterfingers! agree with checking the screws as well as making sure your spool is aligned /w the pinion.

I have the Core 101MG and have not seen this issue on mine as of yet.  It sounds like something has gotten either inside the spool and is pushing the gap wider or maybe one of the spool bearings has fallen apart.  Either way I would take all apart and put it back together.  Maybe something will reveal itself.  

 

If the bearing did break it would cause the spool to droop and create the gap.  If you pull some line off and reel it back in, you should notice that the spool will wobble.  I have seen this in only one reel (old green curado bsf) and it was an easy fix, just a bearing. 

Doesn't the core have a separate piece under the removable side plate that locks the spool in place? It looks like a red dial? I don't own one just remember seeing it.

Yes there is a red piece that has came lose it happen on mine a couple years ago. Take the side plat off and you will see the round red piece that hold the spool in, just tighten it up but loosen the tension knob  first, then reset it.
