Buzzbait Modifications?

Featured Replies

What do you guys like to do to modify your buzz baits? Do you prefer to leave the skirt on or take it off?  What about adding grubs or swim baits?  favorite combination?

The only time I ever modify a buzzbait is in the fall fishing lake of the ozarks. I throw the Omega buzzbait in black and tip it with a Lake Fork Live Magic Shad (the fork tail one, not the boot tail) and slow roll it just enough to make the blades barely bubble the surface. By cables, under walkways, inside boat slips and along docks will get this thing absolutely pulverized.

I put single tail grubs on the back of mine, matching the color of the buzzbait. It adds extra action and appeal, and I believe it results in more hookups. Also, I like waking my buzzbaits with the blade just touching the surface, and I think it helps doing that because there's more underwater appeal.

Yep, this is about it.

I push the blade against the front of the wire bend it and cut off the extra wire so there is more room for him to get the hook in his mouth then bend the wire next to the head so the body runs deeper in the water and angled down and turn the hooks up so he sets the hook himself. The skirts shorten some and lengthen others. I have a bag full of black skirts with Fl. green tips that they just love.

The best buzzbait mod I ever made was switching to Cavitrons. 3/8oz black and black 95% of the time, no trailer or trailer hook. The only actual mod I may do is wire tie the skirt.

Also, crimp the rivet so it won't turn, and rough it up a little too.  This helps the squeak.
