Any Kayakers Use A Trailer?

Featured Replies

I am considering looking for a trailer to haul my FS12T around on instead of putting it on top of my car and having to unload everything before/after loading it. I plan on having this trailer for a long time, especially because I will not allow myself to upgrade kayaks until I have one. I will be pulling it with my car, until I get a truck next year. KEep in mind that I have zero tools, live in the city, and will probably be storing it in a storage room. I'm thinking I should look for one that someone has already modified for kayaks. Just need some guidance on where to start, what to look for, ect... Thanks in advance guys.

Best thing i ever did was finish up my trailer.  less than $500 into it including lifetime registration and i am pleased.  above is the link to my post describing it all.....

I like the yakima trailer but it is pretty much only a toy hauler and that's it....no real weight bearing capacity. I have also heard great things about the malone trailers that are like the yakima.

If i had the money i would have bought the http://www.spacetrailers.com

best of both worlds with lockable storage and the ability to take off the top and use it as a utility trailer as needed.  Just too pricey for me right now.

I thought about it once or twice, but I can't justify the price.

If you are getting a truck for sure within the next couple years maybe look at a "T" bar like extend-a-bed. It's what I use... 100 $ on amazon (or more fancy expensive models out there), works great for my 14' cuda with a 5'5" box on the truck. Won't work for the car probably but if you can hold out it's probably a good option.

Thanks guys! And the truck bed extender is my last resort. I would much rather have a trailer that I could keep all of my gear on/in. Just hook up and go to the lake!

Ive been using my truck, with a Tbone extender, and a lumber rack to haul two different boats, but Ive really had an interest of in the malone 4 yak trailer....Almost 2k though...

Be nice to haul all the boats on it, with everyone in one vehicle for once....

Harbor freight. Works great.

I use the bed extender for my canoe and kayak. Works great, no heavy lifting over your head and takes about 10 seconds to load up the boat/kayak. ( make sure you buy a locking hitch pin so no one steals it when you're on the water)

Jon, which one do you use?

I have a Ride 135 and a Nissan frontier.... bout time to get a trailer!  I don't necessarily travel too far, but sometimes will haul it about 4 hours to NC on the highway so would like to find something stable enough for the higher speeds and all.

It's the long framed one, I think. My kid has the short frame, and that would work too. They're two least expensive ones they sell.

  • Super User

Do you put any other framing, etc. on them? I'm going to buy two NuCanoes and most likely one of those trailers... Do you just ratchet strap them down?

You need some sort of crossbar and some padding. An old roof rack and a pool noodle worked. I use the cheap DSL lock straps. The ratcheting style tend to be over tightened too easily, goofing up your hull. You want the straps smug, not tight.

What would I have to do to get you to post a pic of your trailer set-up? Settled on the Nucanoes, still working out the trailer...

I use a trailer for my canoe. I'm in or out of the water in minutes.

Which one are you buying? I have the Frontier 12.

When I go myself, I don't use a trailer. I just slide it in the back of my minivan. Otherwise, I use a utility trailer with a 2X4 floor, spaced for drainage.

Sorry, but I don't know how to post a pic.

The actual question was to J Francho, but all advice is appreciated. We're getting a 12' Frontier and a Pursuit. Fish tandem from the Frontier when my son wants to go, and have the pursuit for longer trips myself or if both the wife and son want to go. Likely getting a utility trailer from Harbor Freight, and maybe ladder racks so that I can put the boats Los/high, and have room for bikes or whatnot on vacation.

I'm fishing with Paul tomorrow night. I'll get a pic of it, since we need to do some boat trading.

  • 2 weeks later...

I use a trailer and pull it with my golf cart.
