Just curious what rod and line everyone is using for 4"-5" swimbaits.  Thanks.  

What do you mean by 4-5 inch swimbaits? soft plastic, soft body, hard body?

I have 4 inch reins soft plastic swimbaits that go on a darter head on my spinning rod, and I have 4 inch bbz1 shad swimbaits that weigh an ounce. 

No doubt. Need some specifics!

If you are speaking about plastic swimbaits. I have designated my 734 Champion rod, paired with a 1500 Scorpion using  40lb Power Pro. 

I just bought some keitech's and trying to figure out what would be best in my arsenal.

For soft body Skinny Dippers and Big EZ's I use Falcons carolina rig rod, pro qualifier reel spooled with 30# power pro.

If you're talking about Fat Impacts, I throw mine on on a St. Croix Avid 7' M-F and a Metanium 6:1 or 7:1 (depending on how fast I need to fish it). For line I'm using 12-15lb. Fluoro or Co-Poly.

I picked up a Quantum Exo PT when they were on sale. Im going to try throwing the 4.8" keitechs on the Diawa Tatula medium MODERATE that I picked up on sale. Since it is a moderate action would you use braid with a fluoro leader so it has less stretch to compensate for the moderate action or use straight fluoro? It is rated for 8-17 lb test and 1/4-3/4 oz lures.

Since it seems like everyone is talking soft body, I love to throw the 3.8 inch Keitech Swing Impact Fat, and I throw it on a Kistler Magnesium 7'3" MH with 15 lb line. Gosh I love Keitech's

I'd recommend not going with too heavy a gauge wire on your hook choice &  definitely use braided line.

 

Otherwise you may find that rod to be a little "soft".

Thanks for the reply A-Jay. i think I am going to quit trying to put this square block into a round hole. I am going to use that rod for something else and get a better rod for this application.

You're welcome & you may not necessarily need a better rod, as that's a pretty nice stick, rod just something with a little more back end.

Some of the Tatula rods are listed with a R for regular action. It's not like most rods rated as moderate. I'm assuming the rod you have is the 701MRB. If so, it's a mh when compared to most other medium rods. I had that rod and it will work fine for what you want. I sold it because I was looking for an actual medium powered rod and was disappointed when it arrived because it' has the backbone of a mh. Lure weight ratings also suggest it to be like a mh. 3/4 is what 90% of mh rods are rated to. You'll be fine with it.

You are absolutely right. It is a REGULAR action. I guess I just assumed that was the same as MODERATE.

as a guy who fishes mostly swimbaits, the only way I see this rod working out for you is if you fish your keitechs on underspins with the lightest gauge hook you can find, and still expect to miss hooksets. Thats an extremely soft rod to be using with this style of fishing.

sounds perfect. I have a duckett ghost, a medium moderate cranking rod thats absolutely perfect for shallow squarebills, Dt 4's, as well as small poppers.

The rod will work fine for for throwing soft plastic swimbaits with either an open jig hook or ewg hook. It will also work well for anything else you wanna throw. It has plenty of backbone as it's underrated and it's a medium heavy in hand. The action is closer to fast also. I owned that rod and used it for about a month before selling it. I used it as my all purpose bank beater rod. I threw all types of baits on it. Including 4.8 keitechs.

You can't just assume it won't work for your needs because people on the internet say so. Most of which have not even owned the rod you're asking about. At least fish it a few times and decide for yourself. You might really like it, or hate it. You're the only one who can decide that part. A lot of high end Japanese rods like Megabass have a mod/fast action. It's pretty common.
