Gun scrubber

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried using gun scrubber on the worm gear? I can't see it hurting the worm gear as long as you oil it afterwards, but I don't know what it would do to some of the other plastics, metals, etc on the baitcaster.

I don't think it would be unsafe at all but the better way to clean would be disassembly. Brushing away contamination and adding a drop of oil in between services should suffice.

Keep it away from any line.  I don't trust it on plastics, either, but I'm likely paranoid on that part.

Josh

i would suggest remoil spray for that.

Its fine.....its almost the same formula as the old Reel Scrubber they used to sell. I loved the Reel Scrubber.

I've never found any of that stuff to be necessary.  Simple Green works fine for me.

Agreed, but I clean my reels about once every 6 months and I figured that would get a lot of the grime and debris out.

That being said do you think scrubbing with a brush and dropping oil is still better that blasting it with scrubber and oiling?

It depends how gummed up it is. If it's that bad, the rest is probably due. You're not using grease on the worm gear are you? It collects too much gunk in an open application like that. The fact that your doing any maintenance is commendable. No harm in over doing it if you have the time etc.

No I put a few drops of oil on it. I only grease the gears, excluding the worm gear.

I use Break Free CLP for cleaning/ lubricant on the level wind as needed between servicing  for decades, works good.

Tom

Has anyone tried this on nylon gears, like are found in the Ambassadeurs?

Gun Scrubber is the same as chlorinated break cleaner or carburator cleaner,  it's not a lubricant. I wouldn't used it on my fishing reels or polyimde (Nylon) parts.
