co angler: how to fish "slow"

As a coangler, how can you fish "slow" when your boater is fishing fast? My boater today was in overdrive and we got smoked by the club who were all fishing slow.

Are there are techiques that would fish slow enough for sluggish bass while run and gunning down bank?

Try to explain to him that maybe fishing slower you can catch some fish. I know I have been paired with a run and gun guy and I never got the chance to fish slower baits. During mid day we didn't have anything in the live wells, I ask if maybe we could try worms and lizards. He said yea, but I've never fished those things.

Point is, they may not even know how to fish slow, so try to enhance his fishing tactics. If that fails, try not to pair up with him again. Also if you a non- boater and you can pre select your partners, find out what he fishes, cranks, worms, spinnerbaits etc.

Use a heavy bottom contact bait so it gets down faster. Put it in the high percentage areas so you can fish them the best you can before you're by them.

It's just something you have to deal with as a co-angler.

The guy I fish with is a reaction bait, run and gun type of guy. For one, it's been good for me to learn that style of fishing. But oftentimes, I'll pick up a jig and fish behind him. I get about one cast to his three, but I can keep up even with the trolling motor rolling along.

I learned my lesson a little while back.  I was a Co in a tournament where the Pro up front got to call all of the shots (and rightfully so in this format).  He was screaming down the bank while hugging it and I couldn't even make bottom contact behind.  To make it worse, we were running between the bank and timber, so behind the boat was my only option.  I have found that heavy (3/4 or 1 oz) swinging jigheads, 1oz snag free (lindy rig weights) for C-Rig, and some heavy weighted swimbait hooks should always be in your arsenal.  It may not be the slow finesse style you are looking for, but at least there are a few options to catch fish.  Good Luck!

Ive been in the same "boat" . As the boater was busy covering copious amounts of water " he probably read about it in Bassmaster "  with a spinnerbait , I casted a Texas rigged worm with a 1/4 ounce weight into shallow cover . lift and drop a couple of times then repeated . I won that two day event .

I've been told several times that I fished a texas rig faster than anyone they ever seen .

The worst thing that can happen to a co angler is when the boater is clipping along a grass / weed line. When that happens to me I toss a heavy bait like Blue mentioned to get it down quick and hope for a reaction strike.. If he's fishing a grass line on the right side throw everything you got on the left, moving baits included..I don't throw out back behind the motor. BUT if he goes through a weed, slime, grass area and makes a trail, I'll toss behind the motor first and keep throwing there until we're out of my casting range.

If the boater is any good it will make it tougher, but he can't hit it all.

I've won tournaments and out fished him doing that. Not often but it can happen.

Just remember it's his boat, complaining about where and how he moves it will only make for a long day...longer for you.
