Rigging Question

Featured Replies

If I'm rigging the bait below on a ball jig, should the hook come out the top or the belly? The top right?

Thanks!

Top right

I'm a top guy. That just does not sound right but form some reason.

Yes, out the top! With swimbaits like that on ball jigs I find it paramount to have them rigged as close to perfectly straight as possible - bunching up or sideways seems to throw the action off big time. To help with this, I'll lay the swimbait over the hook where it should sit and make note of where the hook should come out the top. If I have one handy, I'll even put a tiny dot there with a sharpie, so I have a 'guide' of where my target is.

Yes - Top

Oddly enough, as long as you rig the bait straight you can do it upside down or even off the side (either one) and it will work fine. It will change the action somewhat, and this is sometimes good, and sometimes not.

Out the side is the recommendation of one of  the Inn-Fisherman experts.  I haven't had enough success with either to have a personal opinion.  I've used similar swimbaits out the top with good success as trailers on swimjigs for largemouth.
