Odd hookups

Recommended Posts

Recently I've started using zman chatter baits, it's quickly become my first thrown bait when I start and the last thing I throw before I leave..

But recently I've been hooking fish in the top of their heads, almost right between the eyes, luckily I've missed their eyes all 3 times I've had this happen. Am I doing somthing wrong? Or are the fish hitting the lure differently? Maybe missing it but  giving it a bump and I'm taking that as a hit so setting the hook is driving it into their heads?

I just catch and release so I don't wanna hurt the bass and then throw em back just to die.

If youre fishing the same water over and over the bass may be becoming accustomed to it .

I am but it's a fairly big Lake, no way I'm seeing the same bass every time I go out.

Were you hooking them in the mouth area before?  Sounds like they're taking it deeper.  You can do a couple of things. You didn't mention what type of line you use, but something with less stretch (heavier lb. test). Is one thing. Another would be speeding up your retrieve slightly. Going a little heavier on the jig will allow you to run it faster, but still run it at the same depth you have been.

I was hooking them in the mouth, Ill have to pick up heavier line. I've been using 12# since it's all j have right now.

It's just weird that it's not even getting I'm their mouth, it's on the top of their heads.

I haven't caught one in the head lately or that I even remember. But last weekend I did hook one on the bottom lip from the outside in. I'm still not sure how my t-rigged worm didn't bounce off the outside of the fish. I just consider it a freak deal. Three times in the head is odd.

my mistake. I thought you were hooking them in the roof of their mouth and the hook point was coming out on top their head.  Sounds like they're slapping at it rather than biting it. Smallmouth?

I didn't, hence the spelling . Sleeping 2 hours in 2 days does a body (and your grammar/spelling), good kids.

I'm just messing with you OP. Just to clarify, hooking fish outside of the mouth between the eyes? Or is it straight up through the roof of the mouth and coming out between the eyes? I fish a bladed jig a lot and it's pretty rare to see one get hooked outside of the mouth on one.

It's outside the mouth between its eyes, I can post a pic of the fish I got you can kinda see the bump where it was hooked but I took the hook out already

Where that little hump is between his eyes is where I hooked him, like I said, luckily I missed the eyes.

do you swing upwards when you feel the bite?

i usually do a 2-3 o'clock hookset.  but that may be the incorrect way to apply the hookset but i havent hooked one in the eye like that with a chatter bait.

worm fishing on the other hand where i lift up ive been noticing that problem too. i feel really bad about it as well.

It seems to me they are simply swiping at the bait. Is the water dirty?

That's weird, never hooked one on a bladed jig there before. Were you reeling slowly? Only thing I can think is if you were moving it very slowly and the fish tried to pin your bait to the bottom.

I would think you are hooking them with the main hook and not a trailer hook.\

I would surmise that the bass made an aggressive attack at the Chatterbait, missed, and when it turned you hooked it in the head.

You ran into a school of the same size bass and each took a turn to destroy the Chatterbait.

I have hooked bass in the head and side when they strike and miss the bait.

Nothing special about this situation other than it happened to you for the first time.

What is special is the number of bass you hooked in this manner.

But it does not matter. Each one counts.

Please continue to throw that Chatterbait and have some fun.

Not really, probably about 3.5 - 4 ft visibility.

I'm going fairly alow, burning it hasn't produced any bites so I'm going at about a moderate pace I'd say. Seems like going to slow atm isn't catching their attention.
