Metanium MGL vs Aldebaran 51?

Featured Replies

Besides the weight, what is the difference between the two?  They seem to be priced pretty close to one another in the Shimano lineup, and according to JapanTackle, they are both fine for saltwater use.  I'm in the market for a new reel to pair with my MBR842C GLX as a senko rod, and these two are the front-runners.

Thanks,

Dave

I'd get the aldy for that rig...

May also be worth noting that the JDM MGL has a slightly shallower spool than the US version. Not sure but I would venture to guess there is a slight weight difference lending the JDM MGL to cast light baits better. I have the JDM MGL and it is a superb reel though I have only gone down to 1/4 oz. The Alde will still be lighter and have a smaller frame. I think both would be worth contenders but if you can put your hands on them it may sway your decision.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't let my magnesium reel be near to salt in my kitchen even if Shimano says it's saltwater "safe".

The 13Met and the MetDC are a little smoother and more "powerful", I assume the MGL is too.

I'd still go with the Aldebaran if the line capacity is not a problem. I have one on a NRX 842 and it is unbelievably light and incredibly small!
