Looks like a wood J-Plug.  They're used a lot in the pacific northwest for trolling for salmon.

I hooked it in a small lake in Ontario. Would it possibly be used for lake trout

It definitely looks like one. I only know of one brand that was made of wood, but all the ones I've ever seen have those little ball bearing chains for the tie on, and a concave mouth. I'm wondering if this is a home brew. If it is that's pretty cool to find.

Looks like a Canadian plug called Lyman.  Similar to a J Plug, but made of wood, and has a solid line tie and hook hanger. Made in many different colors and sizes.  Very popular for Lake trout in Canada, and the North West.
