Going through my tackle last night and noticed I needed to change out some hooks on my cranks. What do you guys think about putting feathered trebles on the back of crankbaits?

I wish I could just do it and try it but it's not really the time of year and weather that constitutes crankbait fishing.

Have any of you tried this? Would the extra material on the back treble inhibit the action?

the x rap shad has a feathered treble it doesn't seem to stop the action at all 

I build my own cranks and swim baits, I can say yes a feathered treble does affect the action... Same as if you snag a weed on the rear hook

You see them on jerk baits because a consistent oscillation (wiggle) isn't needed... Since jerk baits start and stop, there is no constant water flow around them, the feathers don't get a chance to interfere with vortex shed 

I put them on most of my minnow style baits. When the lure is at rest the feather will pulsate which I think helps. I also have put them on a couple of square bills & pulled them alongside the boat to see what find of action the lure had. I did not notice a difference but when I stopped it & as it floated up the feather had movement, again I think it helps. 

I will on occasion tie up some replacement trebles with feathers and flash for jerkbaits, but will sometimes tie some up with just a little white bucktail and a few strands of either krystal flash, mylar, or evenskirt strands.

 I have used these lighter versions on some wide wobbling cranks, and though I didnt notice any change in action, there very well may be some nonetheless. 

I believe any added attraction to a lure is "additional" I did notice that the cranks I did add these to often got hits when at rest and floating.

Only on wake baits like the SK Wake Shad.

The only feathers I use on treble hooks is chicken feathers. Marabou feathers will give you more bulk at rest. 

Take a look at Iovino's or Owner feathered treble hooks and use a guide to making your own.

Putting a rear treble hook with feathers shouldn't impact the action unless the hook has too many feathers. I paint the rear hook white on Shad color crankbaits in lieu of feathers. Structure spoons and surface lures feathered treble hooks work better ot me.

That's exactly what happens on a swim bait... I built this one, then decided to tie buck tail on the rear treble... It dampened the action a bit, but I think it looks cool so I left it

 

 

ive never tried it on a crankbait, but I know how one little weed or leaf can kill the action all together... So I don't think you would like the result, but you can try it, ez to switch back if it don't work

One other factor is size.  The feathered treble will make the lure appear larger.  Could be good or bad depending on the fish's  preference that day. One thing for sure, keep them very thinly dressed, so they have a little flash, like fish's tail, but don't look thick/heavy/unnatural.  A thin white feather and a few strands of pearl crystal flash or similar is all you need.  Maybe a very small red feather (or red crystal flash).
