Fenwick hmg or Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0

18 posts in this topic

I'm in the market for a new casting rod. I have narrowed my search to the hmg or the Veritas.

I'm looking at medium heavy fast action since it will be for t-rigs and wobble head jigs mainly.

I would like some feedback on these models cause there are mixed reviews on both models of rods.

The hmg is the top of my price range too.

I personally like the HMG better although mine is a spinning rod.  I don't think you are going wrong with either rod for that action..  just remember that the veritas runs a littler heavier than advertised

At 50 bucks I'd buy 2 Veritas over the HMG.Not knocking the Fenwick as I haven't fished it.Also I'd look at the Falcon Bucoo.

I have a couple of both and I like the HMG better, not saying that the Veritas is a bad rod at all. I think both run a little heavy for the action compared to say St Croix but I find myself grabbing the HMG if I'm going out with just one or two rod in the kayak. If fishing from boat I take them both I use the Veritas7' M for soft plastic and the HMG 7' M for spinerbaits. I've used the HMG to wrestle red in the marsh and have a HMG MLF spinning rod that I'd pick over my avid for speckle trout.

I've never held a Veritas, but I fish with a few HMG rods.  I've always been satisfied with them.

I was at Academy this evening for something else, so I stopped at Fishing and found the Veritas 2.0 rods. They had the same one in stock that I just ordered, except theirs is a one-piece, priced at $100. Yep, it's much stiffer than I expected for a medium. Probably should have bought the ML. Abu rates this for 6-12 lb line, but I think 8 lb would be a more realistic lower limit. I was hoping this could serve dual purpose in a pinch (crappie and bass), but that's not likely. Guess I'll need to look around the used market for something lighter with faster action, maybe put a second kit together. No problem, the Veritas will work fine for haulin' out some 10 lb bass.  :D

Flip a coin, I have had both, and both are nice rods for the money.

If price is a factor, go with whatever is on sale.

It's true the Abu rods run a little heavier than their rating, but if you know that going..........adjust accordingly.

I personally like the reel seats on the casting Veritas better than the HMG, and just the opposite for spinning, I like the HMG reel seats better.

I own both Veritas and HMG casting rods and like them both.  I prefer the Veritas.  To me they load up a little better and just have a nicer 'feel' to them.

My suggestion is handle both, put your favorite reel on them if possible and go with your gut feeling because you're fishing it.

They're both great rods.

I have 4 generations of HMG rods and don't know if they have redesigned them since the latest that I purchased 2 years ago. The latest generation HMG rod is the only one I have had trouble with and have had 3 rods replaced under warranty do to defective reel seats. If it's any consolation, there warranty process is pretty smooth although I did have to cover the return shipping on all the rods.

You won't get any of that here ... uh huh, sure.  Anyway ... my vote is for the Abu.

I can only go by rods I own and I think the HMG (and the HMX) are outstanding rods for the money.  I have over 25 freshwater rods now and have to pick and choose when I go fishing.  My HMGs and HMX are always among the chosen.

I will admit bias toward Fenwick, I'm not a brand loyal guy but I have bought more Fenwick rods over the last 5 years than anything else. Most of my Fenwicks are Elite tech smallmouth rods and Aetos rods but I do have a 7'2" M-MF HMG rated 3/8oz to 1oz, pretty strange rating for a medium power rod. It is designed as a cranking rod and I use it for square bills mostly but it does well with most cranks down to 10' to 12'. Anyway, the fit and finish along with how well the rod feels in hand along with the performance makes it a favorite of mine even though I have cranking rods that cost more than twice as much. The Veritas is a rod I never used but they are made by pure fishing as well, and judging from the amount of guys I know who use them I'd say that no matter what you choose it will be a good rod, to me it would come down to the handles, the HMG has a thinner handle, I happen to like it but some may not and the Veritas has a more tradition handle diameter and is a split grip. The ergonomics would be the deciding factor as both rods perform above price point.

That's for a 6' rod and that is the generation of rod I had issues with the reel seats. They must be introducing a new model.

My son uses Veritas and I believe he's had issues with the guide inserts coming out
