What's everyone's top 5 lures for each phase of the spawn (pre-spawn, spawn, & post-spawn)? I don't know much about the spawn & post spawn, so here's my top 5 pre-spawn.

1: football jig & chunk trailer 

2: suspending jerkbait

3: lipless crankbait

4: squarebill crankbait

5: Texas rig or pitching jig 

Its  the best time of year for a floating minnow bait . I use the Bomber Long A  . My other lures are pretty much  the same as yours .

Pre-spawn:  Suspending jerkbaits, jigs, "ned" rig, shallow and mid depth cranks, lipless crankbaits.

Spawn:  Half of a zinkerz on a 1/16 oz. mushroom head, 2.5 inch yum crawbug, a 1/32 ounce crappie sized tube, finesse jig, plus lots of other small sized stuff. I bring every rod I own when spawn fishing, so I can show each fish several different lures quickly, each lure only gets one unless the bass shows interest.

Post spawn: Weightless trick worm, spook, ned rig, popper, senko.

 

Crank ( Wiggle Wart ),jerkbait, wobble head,jig, senko.

I'll use a Senko for all three phases, lipless and a spinnerbait also come into play.

Pre-spawn:

Finesse tubes, Rapala F-11 shallow; Shad Raps and finesse tubes slightly deeper. Traps and spinnerbaits on crazy bite days.

 

Post-spawn:

Jigs, Tubes, suspending jerks, small cranks, Ned.

 

I don't fish for spawners. You can always find pre or post-spawn fish while others are on the beds. I seem to catch more bigger fish with that strategy. But that's just me. I've fished my home lakes for a lot of years, know them well,  and know were to look. Outside my home area sight fishing spawners might be the thing to do.

You just never really know what the day will bring. Variations of water temp and clarity, as well as seasonal and daily weather changes, can and do affect the bass moods. I never approach a situation with a fixation of what I want to throw. I think trying to force feed is a mistake made by a lot of good fishermen, especially when starting off in the spring.

 

Carry a wide variety of presentations and try focusing on depth & speed controls, on various structures, to peek their interest. Once you find fish, then you can narrow down your presentation accordingly.

 

Fishing mainly for smallies, the three basic rigs I always have set up and ready to go (in early spring) are: 1) a blade bait 2) a drop shot and 3) a hard jerkbait. I will never leave a structure without trying a popper as well at some point, even over 20' of water. It might surprise you. Like I said, you just never know!
