Berkley Lightning Rod Shock ($9)

That's a great deal for someone that can't drop a ton of money on a few new rods.  But for someone that already has higher end gear, I'm not sure wouldn't be a waste of money.  Spend it on baits, accessories, line, etc., or save it.  I guess I just don't get the "backup" plan.

I fish a lot of high end gear including rods over $500, and I have a lighting rod (spinning) that still gets regular use in my lineup. I've fished them since I was a teenager though so maybe I have a bias, but I do find them to be exceptional rods for the cost. There are a lot of $100 rods that I would pick that rod ahead of.

Also, I dont necessarily buy "backup" rods but I do lend stuff out for use to some family and friends, and having one of them destroy a $40 rod would not be the end of the world for me. Even better if it only cost me $9.

Only trying to make a point that a $31 savings is pretty substantial, especially if you are buying multiple rods.  I think driving 20 miles for the sole purpose of saving $31 ($93 in my case) is simpl

You can try Walmart.com as well to find the $9 Shocks. I ordered a $9 MH 7' casting rod and got free in store pickup.

That was the only size and action Shock available in my area for $9

If you click on the item and then select the size, you can see the price. I found one in a store near me, 6'6 MH fot $9, but the 6'6 M and 7' MH were both $39

okay what size would you guys recommend for a cranbait rod throwing traps, squarbills, etc? I found a couple for 9$ thanks so much.

This.

I had 3 choices when I searched Berkley Shock (2 different casting, 1 spinning) 2 of them were $39 but the last one was a 7'MH casting rod and that was $9 when I clicked on it.

There's a big difference between "loaner" and "backups."  My backups are generally the same as my starters.

I agree with this. I have some cheap setups (and cheap for me is cccchhhheeeeaaappp) to loan out. The $9 shock falls into this category. I have on occasion used these loaners when bank fishing in some rough areas. Those are places I don't want to take my starter stuff and risk it getting banged up.

When I go fishing I will take 2-3 setups with me all around the same quality as my starter.

One $9 lightning shock 6ft6 medium is on the way. Im like a kid the night before Christmas. :) Might take a ride and get a couple more for the heck of it.

just a heads up guys I ordered a shock rod from Walmart.com for in store pickup and they only had medium heavies. when I told the girl I wanted the medium I was able to select online she looked it up and the online ad says medium/heavy and said she's not sure why it shows a medium selection. they had about 10 of them all in medium heavy. I got it anyways cause its $9 and just starting with bait casters so I'm not out a ton of money if its not my thing.

going to order a few more as gifts for my brother and buddy. cant beat the price its a very nice rod.

go online and search every zip code you know has a Walmart. I had to go to a farther one cause mine didn't have them cheap.

I occasionally bank fish in Bridgeport Ct.  If you aren't familiar with it, there are some highly suspect neighborhoods but the fishing can be great, especially at night.  I'm not bringing my $200 loomis with my curado, not even leaving them in the car.   Generally at least one of my buddies is carrying and I still don't feel absolutely safe.  "Sure take my $9 lightning rod" I'd rather not get shot or shoot at someone for my pole.  In the mean time it's a decent cheap rod.

anyone found any of the 7'6 heavy ? i looked yesterday but they only had one casting a 7'mh

when i clicked on those it said they were sold by someone else and not Wal-Mart. its almost like walmart.com is becoming amazon with using other sellers. I got screwed 2 times clicking medium and then the store says its only medium/heavy 6ft6 on sale and nothing else. they actually changed it last night for my stores.

How far are some of you willing to drive just to save $20?  Reminds me of my grandpa driving 20 miles to save 5 cents a gallon of gas.

I've got 4 Wal-Mart's all within 20min being the farthest. the key is buy more than one rod. that was my plan until they told me the sale was only for medium/heavy rods.

I just went there and they are still $39.99...where/when did you get yours for $9 online?

On Monday 3/27/17 on the Walmart.com website I searched Berkley Shock. Out of the search items I chose the casting models. I then went through the various sizes. the 6' M , and 6',6" MH versions came up as $39.99 when I chose the 7' MH it came up as $9 and it was available for pick up at my local Walmart as it said "in store purchase".

If you don't see this deal then I can only assume there are no clearance rods available in your area.

you need to search several zip codes for different stores around you. i have 4 walmarts close to me and only one had the rods for 9$ i checked all 4 stores online until i found it.

Just checked all the stores in my area on walmart.com.  The stores around me have the 6'6" MH baitcaster for $9 and the 6'0' M spinning for $7.  All the others are $39.

You're saving $31 per rod.  I'd have to drive 300 miles for one rod to not save money.  I plan on picking up 3 rods, so I would have to drive from Louisville, KY to Orlando, FL to not save money.

Sure.  If you don't value your time at all.  I'd rather pay $30 more and instead of spending time driving 300 miles I'd go fishing.  That's just me though.

I would drive the 20 miles to my closest Walmart and buy one but I'd also plan something else to do while I'm in the area as well.  What's great is that the two Walmarts close to me are on the way to fishing spots.  Perfect!

Only trying to make a point that a $31 savings is pretty substantial, especially if you are buying multiple rods.  I think driving 20 miles for the sole purpose of saving $31 ($93 in my case) is simply put, a smart financial decision.  Not sure of many instances where you can save almost $100 for about an hour of your time.

Thought I'd mention that I directly pass 3 Wal Marts on my daily commute to work which adds zero $$ spent in gas to pursue these rods.  And have 13 Wal-Marts within 25 miles of my house.
