Chatterbait

Featured Replies

So I wanted to make my own chatterbait after reading reviews on this site.  I didn't save money but I bought the materials I wanted.  I just wanted opinions on what else you guys have done to customize your own chatterbait.  So what do you guys think of it?  Should I change anything? Thanks in advance

Love your set up, perfect colors ! Where did you get the head from ?

I bought my own set of Chatterbaits stuff from Barlow's Tackle (Shakee Lures)

Its not as quite pretty as yours but it works great !

Nothing wrong with that!!!! Years ago I made a bladed swim jig with a double split ring set up and it worked great, what the split rings do is they cause the bait to hunt wildly. After using a fixed blade I can honestly say I like the split ring better, much more erratic action, right now I'm pouring the same head as Bluebasser86 that uses a heavy wire flat eye hook so it only needs a single split ring to attach the blade but what you have will work well for sure!!

Looks good. The only problem I  have had with 2 split rings is they occasionally bind and don't want to let the bait work correctly, but it's a minor issue. I use the flat eyes so I only need 1 split ring.

Flat eye meaning the eye of the jig is perpendicular to the hook.  In other words its 90 degrees to the ones you have so it only needs one split ring to make the blade face the right way.

Ok thanks for clarifying

Try using a punch to open up the eye of the jighead. This is what I do and it works on the Gamakatsu hooks I use as well as the Mustad 32886 which is what should be in that head.

Working on duplicating the original Chatterbaits.

I've made lots of chatterbaits and I'm a firm believer that using jig heads with vertical line ties that require two split rings is not ideal, two split rings reduce the transmission of vibration from the blade to the jig due to the extra ring, less vibration bad? No in some situations it catches more fish for me but like mentioned above they tend to bind up requiring a hard snap with the rod to get them going again and sometimes you hafta pull it in and fix by hand..

Here is the link to the blades on Phenix site but they aren't cheap.

They look great, love the color schemes.  IMHO though, I like the football head jigs much better for this application as you get the blade knocking the head and causing all that delicious sounding ruckus that the bass come lookin for.

a 6 pack of black blades for $20?

thats some pricey blades man, almost the cost of an original chatterbait when it was on sale on black friday.
