I'm looking for a popper that catches bass. Is this a good one?

For largemouth bass in Florida, I'm kind of forced to use a weedless popper like a hollow popping frog.

But for smallmouth bass, I've had some of my best topwater days on a 'clown' Skitter Pop.

 

                                           I believe the 'Clown' pattern has been discontinued

Yea on your other thread skitter pop was mentioned a few times. My PB came on one.

Why do they always discontinue making my favorite lures. I also miss the Heddon dying flutter (bass colored, cedar, double prop) topwater.

Don't know about the skitter pop but my 2nd largest fish ever came on a regular Rebel Pop-R. 

Used to catch a lot of fish on a blue/silver #7 Skitter pop. Don't fish them anymore, not for any other reason than I moved on to the new hot item I guess. 

Best popper out there in my mind, nothing walks the dog better, nor produces such a good range of sounds. It has the perfect "blip" action.

I have several skitter pops, but they never seem to make it into the tackle bag when I am planning a trip.

I've been using Skitter Pops as my go to popper now for about the last 5 years. My favourite pattern in them has always been the brown frog pattern which does a great job of matching the leopard frogs which I find in many of the lakes I fish. I used to fish them on just straight 6 pound test mono with really good results but changed my setup as zebra mussels started claiming a few more lures during those combative smallmouth battles.

 

I now throw them on braid with a fluro leader. Wait, what? A fluro leader?  What, is this guy on crack?  No, actually, I'm not. Twenty pound braid with about a 3ft lead of 8lbs fluro has gotten me more and bigger smallies than when I fished them on straight mono or braid.  I think the reason comes down to retrieve.

 

I've gotten to know the lakes that I fish very well, and know the areas that I fish that hold big bass. I'll cast out the skitter pop and give it the usual retrieve until I get it into the kitchen. Once in the kitchen, I'll leave it there...for a while. The reason being that once a meal enters the smallies kitchen, it's going to check it out. When it does, they give it a few look overs and then decide if they're either going to attack and eat or just attack out of smite. That's when the fluro leader helps...makes it look more natural.
