When do I use a buzz bait over a buzz toad like a ribbit style frog

Featured Replies

I don't know when one is better other than the buzztoad is weedless (obviously)

what are the benefits of a buzz bait

what are the benefits of a buzztoad

I almost always throw a soft toad, like a Zoom Horny Toad, due to the fact I have good success killing it in openings and you can't do that with a buzzbait. I've also found when the sun comes up and that really good morning frog bite shuts down, pulling a toad under the surface like you're fishing a fluke tends to keep the bite going.

A buzz toad is a much better choice for fishing vegetation and a buzzbait will, IMO, out produce the toad in most other situations. The reason I say that is because of the noise factor. A toad disturbs the surface in a similar way, but the buzzer can be tuned to squeak or click. You can even adjust the blade to catch more water for more commotion.

The only other time I consider a toad over the buzzer is when the bite is tough. It offers a smaller profile and more subtle surface disturbance

Put the toad on the buzzbait!

Both topwater baits serve a similar purpose, but the Solid Toad is more weedless,

especially in heavy surface slop where Buzzbaits tend to bog down.

Ever hold a buzzbait out the truck window while on the way to the lake?

I pretty much follow what you wrote & if I think there's enough water above the grass or I can navigate through the grass I'll throw a buzzbait!

But without a doubt I'll throw all 3, solid body frog, buzzbait, or hollow bodied frog...aint that dumb!

I don't hold them out the window, I tie them to the front guard of a fan and turn it on high speed. That's after I've crimped down and scored the face of the rivet. I've even put a big notch on one side of the blade to make it run off balance. Talk about a commotion, my wife hates when I throw one of those.

I've had a bag of solid toads for over two years and I have never used them.  Guess I should try them one time.

I throw both, and sometimes one outproduces the other. The toad style bait is better obviously in thick vegetation and cover. It also can be better in situations where a buzzbait should be drawing strikes but isn't. Have to let the fish tell you which one they want.

*Buzz Toad can skip better under docks , under limbs , etc. than a Buzz Bait with skirt.

*A Buzz Toad can create a different look , sound and vibration  : You have the surface commotion of the buzz blade rotating coupled with the toad's legs kicking sub - surface which both create a unique disturbance and vibration to bass.

*While a Buzz Toad skips better than a Buzz Bait , you have to experiment with each to see what bass want at that particular time .

*Good Buzz Toads to consider are : War Eagle Buzz Toad , Dirty Jigs Scott Canterbury model Buzz Toad , Strike King Greg Hackney model Buzz Toad . There are also models by Booyah , Green Fish and others  for consideration .

* 3/8th oz. is a good all- around weight Buzz Toad to start to throw (remember - the actual weight is closer to 3/4th oz. or more with Buzz Frame + Toad attached)  .

*Zoom has the de facto standard toad for a Buzz Toad applications  as well as Ribbitt and  Yum with there newer , cost effective Toad .

*Experiment , Experiment , Experiment ...

The buzzbait has a much , much higher hook up percentage , at least for me .

I always have a rod rigged with a buzz bait and a hollow body frog. I'll use a buzz toad when I want to fish through vegetation that I can't get a buzz bait through.

Potomac really thick grass bed= toad

Sparse grass bed=buzz bait
