Difference in cast and spin

Featured Replies

Can someone please tell me the difference in a casting and spinning rod? Thanks in advance for your help.

A casting rod is fished with the guides pointing up, and the reel sits on top of the rod. It has a knob that goes between your fingers for a tight grip. IMG_1768.JPG.3a97b20c273a4da51f4e4f25fdade6e9.JPG

A spinning rod is fished with the guides pointing down and the reel sits under the rod. There is no knob that goes between your fingers on spinning rods.

The two rod types are meant for different types of reels. Casting rods are for baitcast or spincast reels, and spinning rods are fished with spinning reels.

Welcome aboard!

@Jar11591 shows the differences well.

Spinning is an easier method than casting,

which requires a lot of practice given the

nature of casting reels and backlashes. It

can be frustrating to learn, but depending on

your techniques, rewarding at the end.

I'm proficient in both, but use spinning more.

The knob is called a trigger, the term comes from the original baitcasting rods with a pistol grip. Spin casting reels also use baitcasting style rods, but generally the above discription should answer the OP's question about rods. Bait casting reels have a revolving spool, spinning reels a fixed spool with a revolving bail that winds the line onto the spool.

The most conspicuous identifier of a spinning rod is the 'large diameter' Stripper Guide (guide nearest the reel)

You can only use a baitcasting reel cast rod and only a spinning reel on a spin rod.

These are the reels I've got. I have a omega pro 33 on a ugly stick right now that's the only rod I have. I have theses reels that I need to try and find the right rods for. Daiwa gc 120,penn spinfisher v 3500,shimano stradic fk 2500. I'd take some suggestions on rods if y'all have any. Like rods from 50$-125$ would really be my honest price range. Thanks.

Note to self: Don't Google "Stripper Guide" on the family computer...
