If you were to use a 7ft medium power rod would you choose a moderate or moderate fast action for square bill fishing. I would use kvd 1.5s and other small crankbaits such as that.

I use glass/graphite rods for my crankbaits so I assumme it would be moderate.

I use a mod fast glass rod. Works well 

I use a MH Regular rod from Daiwa, gets the job done and I can throw other cranks and spinnerbaits with it as well. A Daiwa regular is the same as other companies fast.

I recommend a mod/fast graphite rod to my customers for shallow cranks. I find it easier to steer the bait through and around shoreline cover with a slightly crisper rod. 

I use both, honestly. If I'm around weeds, I like the fast action for ripping the hooks free from vegetation. 

 

Just something to keep in mind. 

I use a mod/fast or fast. I don't care for mod action at all, for anything.

Like others I like a mod/fast graphite stick for shallow cranks, well almost all cranks really. Still haven't found what I like for deeper cranks. For all nut the lightest weight squarebills I prefer a MH though, generally beacause im throwing shallow cranks around cover. 

I've used mod, modfast and fast rods in my search for the right rod. Like most here, I've come to like the modfast rod best. I throw squarebills into cover, so the fast rod makes it easier to maneuver and get un-stuck. The moderate rod makes it easier to cast and keep the fish pinned. So the modfast rod can bring a nice medium between the too. I personally have grown fond of my Dobyn's Champion 684cb. I bought this primarily for jerkbaits, but it doubles up nicely. I have heard great things about the Fury 705cb and intend to purchase one in the future. 

I fish 3 different rods with squarebills depending on cover, and none is a true cranking rod. Over hard cover like wood, gravel, or rip, I use a 6'6" MH mod rod with 15-20 lb BG. Over grass I fish a 6'9" M or MH fast with 15 lb BG, depending on lure size and how thick the grass is.

Personally, I really like my LTB M/M graphite rod for my square bill fishing. I haven't had problems getting fish out of cover with it, granted we don't have as big of bass up here as they do down south, but we do have northern pike which can put up a heck of a fight and I've landed plenty of those that have come out of some nasty stuff with that rod too.  

This year been using an  Okuma EVX casting rod for lures you describe.

Its a 6'8" medium, mod-fast/fast action and has been very good to me and a pleasure to use.

For me, for most of my square bill and shallow crank fishing a mod/fast is my choice. I do however like to "finesse crank" in the shallow water, especially post front and the dog days of summer, and for that I use a medium light power rod with a moderate action. Day in and day out though the majority of shallow crank fish is done with a mod-fast action as I'm pulling the cranks through sparse weeds and over brush and off of boulders and rocks so a little extra backbone makes it easier to get the lure through the cover.
