Need advice on braided line.  I would like to set a casting rod up for casting light tackle maybe even waitless baits.  Can someone help me on what size braided line I should us?

The lightest braid I use on a bc is 30# power pro for the same presentations you describe.

There are dozens of other brands with different qualities that you may like better.

I use 50 lb braid for flipping real heavy cover.  For the most part, I hate the stuff!!!!!!!!!!

First off,welcome to Bass Resource.Secondly what reel are you using for the application?While throwing light baits and weightless plastics can be done on casting gear,typically lighter line(10-20# braid) and a shallow spool is used.That sized braid isn't really ideal for normal baitcasters as you greatly increase your chances of line dig and backlashes,especially in windy conditions..Not all of us,but a good majority would use spinning gear for this.

I cast weightless flukes and senkos on a casting set up with 40lb braid and 12lb flouro leader. I get good casting distance. I personally don't like going below 40lb braid on baitcasters due to the digging in.

Well Richard, welcome to Bass Resource and the Forums! And to answer your question regarding braided line on my baitcaster, the lightest I go is 15lb without a leader and 30lb with a leader.

The reel I am using is a Abu Garcia STX 

I use 10 lb 832 with an 8 lb FC leader for small plastics all day long with no problems.NEVER had a problem with it digging in

I must be the oddball.

 

I use 20# 832 on spinning and bait casters. I use 60# on some.

 

Once in a blue moon I use 15# Seaguar leader material. (Blue box)

If you are set on braid, 50 lbs is a good choice to keep the line from digging into itself as the smaller diameter braids tend to do on casting reels.  However, for weightless worms, fished on slack line, you may want to consider fluorcarbon.  Fluoro has great slack line sensitivity where braid is pretty dead in that aspect.  Braid also floats which can affect the action of a sinking worm.  You don't have to worry about that with fluoro since it is a sinking line.  I like 12 lb fluoro as a decent "all around" line.

 

Unless you plan on frogging in heavy cover or mat-punching,

30-lb braid is adequate for the lion's share of freshwater situations.

I have 40lb or 50lb braid on all my baitcasting setups, I rarely go straight braid and then tie on fluoro leaders. I love braided line but 30lb and below is just too small a diameter for my liking. The line I use is basically the same diameter as 10 or 12lb which are my favorite diameters to work with but with all the awesome properties of braided line.

50 will work fine, but like was mentioned, you can use lighter if you're not fishing really heavy cover. I have 20 and 30 on a couple casting outfits and it works just fine.
