The Profit, Bar Rescue

10 posts in this topic

Does anyone else watch the show The Profit and find it amazing that people constantly go against what he is suggesting? I mean you SEEK HIM OUT and donot do what he tells you to do!! Always cracks me up, you sought out help from an expert because your business is failing and refuse to change your ways, unbelievable! It's the same with BAR RESCUE. You drove your business into the ground, you bring in a world renown expert, yet you will sit there and argue when they tell you what you need to do to change. My favorite is when they do change, start to have some success but then change back to old ways and habits. THAT TO ME IS THE HEIGHT OF ARROGANCE AND STUPIDITY!!

it is probably played up some for the show.  I would also bet that many of the requests came from minority players in the business more than the actual owners.  Watching bar rescue i am fascinated by the science behind it all and his pedigree says that Taffer knows what he is doing.

People do this all the time in "real" life.

They'll ask for advice, then not follow it, ask how to do something and not follow your instructions, or my all-time favorite: Ask for advice, then want to argue about it.

On that last one...I've reached an age where my reply is, "Really?  I'm not having this discussion."

I have no problem with someone arguing after i give them advice.  They need advice on something so they want to make sure they understand and are convinced that your advice is sound.

I'd just about guarantee that the rejection of the experts advise is written into the script to add drama to the show. "Reality" TV isn't actually very real.

I have found that often people "ask for advice" when what they really are looking for is an expert to tell them how good they are doing something or that failure is not their fault.

Also, it is human nature to use methods that are pleasing but do not yield results than to do methods that are different or not easy in order to get the desired results.  I repeat this to myself every time I take my sister fishing and she ends up "skipping" lures into the sides of peoples boats on the fly.  As I point out the flaw in her mechanics, she says she needs to figure it out "her way"...

These shows are nauseatingly scripted. I can't watch them, it's just too phony.

So one of the most infamous episodes of Bar Rescue was about a place down the street from my friend's house.

http://gazettereview.com/2017/02/piratz-tavern-update-happened-bar-rescue/

I hated the place and found it super annoying, but some of my friends loved it so I got dragged there every few months.  The food was very very hit or miss and the drinks were pretty bad, but so strong that I could give them a pass.  While the place had issues, it was packed most every Friday/Saturday night and was pretty full most week days.  They could have used someone to come in and fix their menu and look at their general business practices, but the "makeover" was just the dumbest thing ever.  They had a niche and as annoying as it was, people loved it and flocked there.

Asking questions about advice is completely different from arguing about it...

When they argue, they really weren't looking for advice...they wanted you to confirm their bias...they tend to get really cranky when you use math and data.

People don't like math and data...it induces cognitive dissonance when it is opposition to their biases.

...and yeah, I've got plenty of biases.  Don't like walleye fishing, or trolling, or spincast reels...lotsa stuff...

None of the reality shows are 'real'

My wife and I happened to be in Las Vegas a couple years back, and stopped in at the Pawn Stars shop.  They happened to be in process to start filming and asked us to stay for the episode.  It was cool to see them getting set up, and by the way, none of the stars actually 'work' there, there are people behind the counter selling items however most of what they have are souvenirs!

Once they started filming, Rick came out, the seller approached (the guy had a brick from Janice Joplin's house or something) and they started into their back and forth.  Every other sentence, The producer would cut and tell Rick EXACTLY what to say.  So all of his lines are scripted, he basically just shows up and they feed him his lines.  When they were done, Rick says to everyone there, "I'm sure this is a huge let down, but now you know the reality of how this is done."
