Best type of sinker for fishing around chunk rock

Featured Replies

What types of sinkers are you guys throwing around chunknown rock? Seems like no matter what size, or style I throw I get hung up. Round rock, boulders, and rip-rap are not an issue.

these dropshot weights tend to work well.

if I am throwing a jig, Football heads seem to roll out of the rocks better.

arkie jigs and bullet weights tend to wedge in chunk rock

I like football jigs, texas rigs and tear drop drop shot weights. The biggest deal to keep from getting hung is letting the lure land on semi-slack or tight line. If you free spool it all the way to the bottom it finds it's way into the cracks more.

Sometimes I use a keel weighted hook if I'm hanging up.  I seem to be able to glide the bait as apposed to diving into the crevices.  Most of the rock I fish is in current so that makes a different too.

All depends on the rig your throwing----You did not mention for what technique??

I have put a 1/16th ounce and a 18th ounce bullet weight on together then peg them in place . The skinnier sinkers get wedged less than a fatter one .

I use these a lot around rocks and they do really well avoiding snags.

so far I've found the retrieve is far more important than the lure. my two retrieves are below but I'd like to hear more:

-work the lure so fast it's bouncing off the rock tops only (pure power fishing--could be done with a crankbait, spinnerbait, biffle bug, even drop shot etc. The long arm of a spinnerbait deflecdts much better vs a chatterbait head that wedges in cracks).

-like Ktho, I use a much slower retrieve keeping it on semi slack or tight line, quickly dragging it over rocks, never allowing it to fully stop and sink in between them.  I'm more likely to do this with a drop shot, tube, T rig etc.

Appreciate the info guys. Seems like I need to start pegging more and using my swing heads while not letting it settle all the way to the bottom.

I like the bait  to be wider than the weight . That way the soft plastic gets wedged  more than the weight and the soft plastic is easier to pull free .

If the line gets into a rock crevice and you pull the weight tight it doesn't matter what shape the weight is. Football heads are OK and so are round heads, pointed heads like bullet shapes are not good in rocks.

I designed and make a standup style jig with a modified viper shape head that works very good in all types of rocks and surprised someone hasn't copied it over the years.
