Guide Select Rods

Featured Replies

I'm looking at either the okuma guide select "big bait series" or the "a" series in XXH

They are basically the same price but i'm leaning toward the older big bait series because of the medium taper vs the fast taper of the "a” (I’d be throwing treble hook baits).

Thoughts?

I have the newer version and all I throw with it are treble hooked baits.

What power? The heavy is mod fast taper, and XH/XXH are fast taper in the “a” series. I don’t know why that is, but that’s what the TW info says. So for that reason I ended up ordering the older model which says it’s a medium taper in the description. That rod is going to be a baseball bat but for the price ($86) I had to try it. I didn’t want to go straight to high end on such a niche setup

Okuma Giude series, the model before the A, has a pistol grip butt end that most users end up sanding down to round. The H power doesn't cast swim baits over 3 oz well, it's under powered for 8" Hudds for example. The A series is a newer blank, lighter weight and still under powered compared to IROD or Dobyns swimbait rods.

Not knowing the lure weight, only it's treble hooks, can't answer the ?

I have the heavy version, and the fast taper is not a problem with treble hooked baits.  As said before, I'd say it's a little overrated by bait size.  The sweet spot is 2-4 oz.

Sounds like you want to throw bigger, so definitely look at the XXH.  The grips on the A series are VERY nicely done, and the rod itself is a little lighter, and crisper feeling than the older GS line that I've used.

@WRB I’ll be using it for deps 250s (6-7oz) almost exclusively. I ended up ordering the XXH with the pistol grip butt.
