Braid for topwater

Recommended Posts

I have always used mono for all of my topwater fishing, but recently had a couple of breakoffs. Does anyone use braid for topwater and is their any negative reason not to?

I am not sure if I will make this change, but i am just curious. Thanks.

Yes - Braid was tailor made to topwater . . . .

Allows for long casts & rock solid hooksets . . .

I use 30lb braid for most topwater. But i always upgrade to stronger hooks as well.

I like braid for most topwater except baits that have an aggressive walk the dog action as it seems like i am always fouling up the first hook.  Other than that, I am braid all the way for al the reasons stated above.

I use braid for all my topwaters except buzzbaits and double propped baits. I've never had the issues with my bait catching the line, even with walking baits, but I usually fish them pretty fast so maybe they aren't getting to glide far enough to tangle up.

I think braid with a mono "shock leader" is the benefits of both.  You can run a heavier mono leader and still get the casting distance, line capacity and manageability, and consistent, low-stretch hooksets.

Some like it. I don't , Only mono for me. For the Plopper I could see the advantage to braid, but not enough to make me switch.

                         Is my mantra

Same here......

If the job requires a slow retrieve or sit and soak bait, I add a fluoro leader.
