Pros and cons of travel rods

Featured Replies

I own a Fenwick Methods baitcasting rod and it has served me very well so far.

Fenwick introduced the "Methods Series" of spinning & casting travel rods a few years back.

Product performs well above it's price point.

Invaluable south of the border.

With two of these there is quite a bit of versatility & effectiveness.

My brother got me that but in spinning form for my birthday. Its actually pretty good. I used it for casting little Cleo’s on a river I was fishing and caught two decent pike. Granted I’d take a 1 piece rod any day but I figured I’d give it a shot.

Having a 4 piece rod at the lake > 1 piece in the garage.

My old Cabelas XML travel rods are not my best rods, but they are comfortable and sensitive .

I got it from Amazon as they had the best price at the moment, it's still on there for $155, which is around what I paid.  It's so nice to be able to stick my rod and reel inside my pack when I am done for the day and hike back to the car without worrying about snagging a longer tube.  They have a few different models, I want to pick up a finesse spinning rod from the same line at some point.

Do you remember which seller you bought it from?

got myself a Daiwa Presso 4pc ultralight over the holidays, haven't tried it yet but it seems like a pretty nice rod. very sensitive, cant wait to use it while creek fishing.

I have amassed a gang of travel rods thanks to frequent travel and backpacking. I have 2 Fenwick Methods and a few BPS Micro Lites that I use for bass and other species. A few observations I've noticed:

The higher power the rod, the more lost sensitivity I've noticed in travel rods compared to similarly specd one piece rods. Travel rods seem a little stiffer to me overall as well. This makes power fishing and cranking a little worse in my experiences, to where I'll limit using travel rods to only when traveling.

Lighter power rods though, like for trout, and I honestly can't tell a difference in sensitivity. My 3 piece UL rod performs just as well as my 1 piece, and at a lower power and shorter length, I can't notice a weight difference either. When I'm backpacking, wading, or creek fishing, that's when I'll reach for my travel rods as much or more than my 1 piece rods.
