Hey all,

 

What is everyone’s thoughts on the G. Loomis NRX? It’s pricy so want to see if it’s worth it. Would get it for an all purpose rod, don’t know which of them I would get.

It's not a magic stick. Does it fit your budget? I have a NRX 872s. It's a great rod but it didn't make me KVD

It’s a little over my budget but I’ve heard a lot of good reviews.

The NRX rods are fabulous rods, but a lot of people hate the recoil guides. While they are the pinnacle for sensitivity, they lack the versatility the Megabass Destroyer USA Daemos would provide. You wouldn't find a better rod than the Daemos for a high end all purpose rod (spinnerbaits, jigs, chatterbaits, etc)

Look into some $200 rods. There are some nice choices there too. Daiwa Elites, St Croix Avid, 

I have an avid X spinning rod but it’s a little on the stiff side. I like the Daemos, the legend Elite, and a couple of the Daiwa rods caught my eye, (the Steez xt, zillion), and the NRX. So far those are my options. 

I've tried a lot of different rods and I have always gone back to loomis, I wish I didn't have such expensive taste. But for whatever it's worth I always catch more than the guys I fish with and although I like to think I'm a better fisherman I'm going to have to give credit where credit is due, I love my loomis poles!

The one NRX to own IMO is the 893c. I use mine for senkos, fat ikas, light t rigs and 1/4-3/8 jigs. It's arguably the most sensitive of the bunch.

I have a bunch of G. Loomis rods for tournament fishing and it is my opinion that they are very sensitive and are excellent transmitters from the line to my hand and fingers.

 

I love my MH crankbait rod which performs as advertised.

 

However, with that said, I also love my David Fritz Cranking Stick which is an excellent crankbait at a much lower price.

For an all purpose rod, I wouldn't spend the money on an NRX. I'd drop down to the IMX Pro or the GLX. The NRX shines in terms of sensitivity and weight. They also have an extra fast action to them, making it great for bottom contact type presentations. 

 

If you want an "all purpose" type action in a premium rod, I'd go with an MBR 843 or 844 in the IMX or GLX line.

The G.Loomis GLX MBR844C is the best "all-around" rod I have ever owned, but I consider it

my dedicated jig and weighted soft plastics rod.

Hi Pat, have you taken a look at Kistler? The helium3 and Mag2 rods are very nice for the price point. The KLX feel and reel S2 hybrid rods are great for cranking too.

For all purpose, look to the GLX MBR.

Agree with Fishballer and Bull. 

The Loomis GLX MBR line is what you want. 

I have the 843C and it can do almost everything on the lighter side.

For most heavier presentations the GLX 844C is next up

I have the 2016 GLX MBR844 and have zero complaints about the reel seat and handle. I find it actually a bit more comfortable then my MB Destroyer FMJ. Personally I despise skeletal reel seats like in the NRX so despite any gains in sensitivity I will never buy one. 

 

But your right ive read some complaints. I think it’s mostly folks with very large hands. 

 

No rod is perfect, I think you just need to pull the trigger on one or two and decide for yourself. 

The nrx is the only production rod on the market that I will pay full retail price for. Any other rod I will only buy onsale or second hand. 

I don't think they're that great as all-purpose rods. If you need something when sensitivity is paramount, there's very few that are on par.

What rod brand and series would you reccomend? 

I would pick NRX/Megabass/GLX in that order.

 

A good all purpose rod is a 843 NRX

Agreed, I think you can still find them at certain retailers....

For all purpose rods that can do everything, the Megabass Destroyer series are hard to beat. They throw a much wider lure weight range than the NRX, which are more technique specific, in my opinion. You lose a little sensitivity (probably not enough for most humans to discern), but one rod can do a variety of tasks. 

I have an 894 but my goto all purpose is a Megabass Orochi Extreme Mission. I will look into a new Powell Endurance 7ft6 utility rod next as an alternate since it handles up to 3oz baits and weights under 4oz for $150.
