Hello all,

 

I would like to get some monofilament for topwater plugs and spinnerbaits. I have used trilene XL and it worked for a while but when I put it back on, it’s all coiled and full of memory. 

last season I began using Sufix Siege 10 pound test mono in Smoke Green colour. I really like it. Casts fantastic and strong. The dark green disappears in water.

Sounds like a job for some KVD line and lure conditioner.

 

Trilene XL, XT or Big Game are perfect mono for baitcasters. Just spray them with KVD L&L the night before fishing.

Sufix Elite is all I have been using for several years with regard to mono.  My wife (very inexperienced) was tossing a square bill when a 9 pound channel cat came out of nowhere and smashed it.  The chaos that ensued during that fight left me mind boggled that the line didnt snap.  Convinced me for life.

Patrick, if you are having problems with coils, do not use XT or Big Game.  The softer the line, the less coiling.  XL is softer than the other two and is a good line for spinning reels.

Elite is a soft line that coils less than Siege.  I use a lot of Siege.  Although it coils a lot when first starting for the day, it rarely gives me loose line on the spool.  Big Game does on occasion, but is fine once wet.

 

As NYW said, try some KVD line conditioner.

 

BTW Patrick, what do you mean "when I put it back on"?  Are you removing the line from the spool to use the other end?  If that is the case, then I would expect it to have memory as it probably never leaves the spool on the first side

I bought the spool for last spring for the same thing and took off line and now that I got another bait casting combo, I put the same spool of line back on (it was a 300 yard spool). I apologize for the confusion

Original Stren, or even better, McCoy Mean Green. Use KVD on both and they stay limp and strong for a long time. Both have great balances of strength and manageability. The McCoy is a little better but harder to find.

I saw McCoy is on Tackle Warehouse so I’m leaning towards that or sunline super natural.

What you will find with any mono is the more you fish the less it coils, it coils from sitting tightly wrapped around your spool.

McCoy mean green is a good balance of strength and castability. Big game is also a good choice, as well as Sufix elite

For nylon monofilement, Berkley XL is my old time favorite, I don't think there is much difference between the XT and Big game. 8lb for spinning, 14lb for general casting and 20lb for heavy cover. All of the Berkley Monofilement lines break at over their rated strength. Just like Yozuri hybrid or the P-line CXX. They say a lower rating on the box but the diameter of the line is thicker so it breaks at a higher test then stated.

     I have been trying out the Sun line Defier and it seems pretty good too.

When I put it back on....do you mean wind it back onto to the reel after a cast? Or do you take it off the reel and put it back on?

I translate it to mean he had a 300 yard spool of line. Originally he used some of the 300 yards for one baitcaster and now used the rest on another. If the line had been sitting on the factory spool for a year there is no wonder its got a lot of memory.

1. I bought a spool of 17 pound trilene 300 yards

2. I put it on baitcaster A in the spring, not all the line

3. I used the line on baitcaster A, then took it off in the summer for another line

4. I haven’t used the line that was still in the spool untill now.

5. I bought baitcaster B

6. I used put the spool of line to put on baitcaster B.

7. Now the line on Baitcaster B is all full of memory.

Got it, you discarded the line you took off of reel A and put the same 17 lb test mono from the same filler spool onto reel B.

There isn't any reason the line should be any different from the same filler spool if the spool was stored in a cool dark place.

What degrades mono is high temps over 105 degrees and low temps under freezing and UV from sunlight. All monofilament line will take a set with time under pressure like being wound tight onto small diameter baitcasting reel spool.

If you have a boat you can drag about 50 yards of line behind the boat without anything tied on at walking speed for a few minutes to straighten it then reel it back on. 

Mono line isn't expensive and should be replaced after using it about every 6 to 10 outings depending on usage.

I tried Sufix Siege last year and it has far less stretch and memory than lines from Berkley and is abrasion resistant as well. To date it is by far the best line I've used. I hear the Elite might be even better but is less abrasion resistant so I will be giving that a try.
