Rod/Reel/Line For Lipless Cranks

Featured Replies

Looking to see what everyone has to say about gear for lipless crankbait fishing.

I've been fishing them for years and have used various rods, reels, and lines. This year I'm most likely going with a 7'2" MH Composite Crankin rod, as I had a lot of success with it last year. The difference lies in the reel. I've used 7:0:1 reels in the past, and am going to see how it works on a slower 6:4:1 reel. Does anyone have any experience throwing lipless baits on that mid-speed reel? I'll be using mostly 12lb flouro, with the exception being heavy grass. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I  usually throw them on a 6'6'' med action graphite rod . I dont even know the speed of the reel on that rod but it is spooled with 12 lb big Game .

I use a 7'2" Composite 12 lb fluoro and I use a 6-4-1 Revo SX . The medium speed reel works better on crankbaits

This year it's a 6'6" MF rod with a revo reel.  I have it spooled with 15 lb Berkeley Big Game.

For 1/4 - 1/2 oz. baits, 7' Medium/Moderate rod, 6.3:1 reel, 10lb. Big Game.

For 3/4 - 1oz. baits, 7' MH / M rod, 5.3:1 reel, 12lb. Big Game.

My lipless are on an old 4oz Gander Titanium Medium graphite with 12lb flouro on a 6.2:1 Curado 100B.  I could never understand why Gander dropped that rod and cleared them for $60 six years ago..  It is an incredible rod.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll end up going with the 6:4:1 reel after all.

7'1" MF St Croix Rage; 6.3 Tat R; 10# Yo Zuri Hybrid.  I wouldn't change a thing...for me, its perfect for lipless. (Except 3/4oz.)

I have tried using cranking rods, but I need the fast tip on the Rage for working them in grass.  So much control and feel.
