What's your go to topwater in the spring? I've fished a lot of frogs, prop baits, etc. and never caught anything on one. I'm considering buying a whopper plopper, but I've noticed that frogs get taken pretty deep a lot of the time and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get those two trebles on the whopper plopper out if that happened with it. What's your opinion on that?

I like just a simple popper first, then if that doesn't work, I'll experiment.  I use these guys in ponds around here.  I've caught largemouth on them here in Colorado, and in Iowa last May, and I've caught snapper and barracuda in the ocean on them.  Pretty good all around topwater.  They're Bass Pro XPS lures, bought about 6 years ago.

 

For me it's always been the original Pop R. 

For me there's none better.

I like two lures and two lures only in the spring, that's a sexy dawg walking bait in sexy shad color and a top water popping frog in bullfrog color just in case they way back in the grass of pads.

Also I have a whopper plopper, great bait. I prefer to fish this around rip rap banks and docks.

For open water situations, I use Sammy Style Topwaters, made by Best Tackle out of Hastings Michigan; in Chrome, Bronze, White or Chartruese. If the bass want something different I throw 3 1/2 inch poppers in the same colors as mentioned above. I actually prefer the Sammy Topwaters though, because they allow me to cover water efficiently and eliminate unproductive areas.

Ok, thanks. Do they tend to swallow the whopper plopper like a frog, or is it usually in the lip? 

I am a big hula popper fan. . .just bought a whopper popper and the new toad runner from booyah. Going next week to try them both.

I’ve not had more topwater success on any other topwater presentation than a walk the dog..its deadly

If they really want it, yes you can't hardly get it out of their mouth. If you have ever seen a crank turned sideways in a basses mouth, that's exactly what it's like. The way the back treble is set up, it has a swinging piece on it which makes it where those fish that just suck it in there mouth that the hook will move directly to their mouth. Hope it's not to confusing.... so yes they eat it both ways but most swallow.

Buzzbait for largemouth, whopper plopper for smallmouth.

Horn toad.  Jitterbug (catches young gators, so watch out!)

The new lunkerhunt prop frogs look promising.  I grew up on the jitterbug, but the whopper plopper has better action and is more versatile (you can buzz it, pop it, walk it, etc.)  For fishing slop/pads, a hollow bodied frog is really the only way to go - aim for the pockets!  As far as hook removal, I would invest in some good fishing pliers, and maybe one of those longer hook removal tools.
