Need a weedless alternative to Mepps Trophy Series Aglia Spinner

Featured Replies

One of my favorite lures is a #4 Mepps Trophy Series Aglia Spinner.   The problem is that I lost 5 of them last weekend as they got snagged in a very weedy lake.

All I want is the shiny part.  The part between the treble hooks and the shiny part gets  caught up in weeds all day as well.  What is a good weedless alternative?

I've already invested in a number of the Meeps.  Can I remove everything from the Meeps except for the shiny piece and attach a weedless #3 hook?

I think you could, I just don’t know how it would affect the hookup rate.

Additionally I’ve found if something I’m pulling through, like weeds, is fouling my hooks, it’s probably fouling the blade too. I’m not sure what I’d do about that ?

I change all my inlines spinners to single hooks but yea, weeds will still foul the blade and ruin the cast.  I do loose very very few of my single hook spinners, so it's worth a try.

I used to work with a guy who swore by replacing the treble with a small EWG hook and using a thin white grub as a trailer.  I built some up but never really fished them.

Have you considered a safety-pin style spinnerbait instead?  They're not strictly weedless, but will come through most weeds better than an in-line.  A related option is a beetle spin or a grub on a jig spinner form.

I grew up fishing Mepps spinners, but nowadays I only use them where I don't have to contend with many weeds and wood.

I hope you have a sampo ball bearing swivel tied on about 8" above your spinner, sometimes that swivel will catch/hold the weeds, allowing the bait to stay clean.
