Im adding 40lb power pro spectra fiber braid onto my Abu Garcia black max which i believe *correct me if im wrong* like 130-150 yrds of line. and im only planing to spool 1 reel and i have just enough to do so. Would you recommend that i just put tape above the knot or should I spool 1/4 of mono then the rest in braid.

I've never had any problems using a piece of black electrical tape as my backing. That's what I would use.

either that or some monofilament, but I would use something to reduce slip.

Which knot? The knot joining your mono and braid, or the arbor knot to tie your braid to the spool?

The knot that you orignally tie on the spool for me just the 2 overhand knots onto the spool then a small piece of tape to go over it. then spool the line onto the reel

I have two reels with all braid and have not had any slip problems just simple over spool with arbor knot. If you don't wanna waste a whole 130yds then add backing or spool only 3/4 full.

Could be the arbor knot then. 

 

I don’t prefer to use tape to secure the knot. It works, but it’s not my cup of tea. 

 

I also don’t prefer to tie through the holes. It’s just tacky to me. 

 

I prefer a pure mono backing when I use braid even in your case where you want to put on all braid. You only need 30 ft. of mono to prevent the braid from slipping. 

 

The other plus is you only need to do this once. Keep that 30’ or so of mono on, even when you replace the braid. You won’t have to tie that arbor knot again for a very long time. 

I back some reels with cheap braid.

Fill the spool with braid.

Pull off 75 yards

Tie to the braid.

Going forward you will be able to split a 150 yard spool easier.....

Or reverse the working end of the braid should you desire at the same spot.

it cost a couple dollars more, but if I get spooled at the coast, at least I have a fighting chance

 

Most spools have holes punched in them.  Just tie a few granny knots around one and you're in business.

I have cheap 10lb mono as backing on every reel I own an it stays there, no matter what goes on top.  Sure saves money on line. This only works though if you cannot throw a bait/lure 100yds LOL.

I'm pretty sure the black max has a drilled spool. Personally on my older style Daiwa Zillion I just tied the braid through the drilled spool and haven't had any problems. For reels that don't have the same spool type I usually just use a bit of electrical tape.

Thanks alot guys. I got the braid on. I basicly just put the line on the spool and put tape on it. This worries me and i hope it doesnt come out but then i spooled about 100 yards of braid. and tied a 5-7 foot 12lb mono leader with a T-rig! Should I be fine with the line just taped onto the spool?? No knots just it taped to the spool

I’ll be honest, I haven’t tied line to the spool in over a decade. I just stick it through the hole and start reeling. I know it’s not proper but I’ve never had any issues. 

Tape isn't used to secure the knot, it's simply a friction surface the braid digs into to prevent the spooled braid spinning on the reel arbor. If the spool has holes tie through the holes. If not wrap 1 layer of tape on the arbor before tieing on the braid. 

If you spool the entire 130 yards of braid it will work good and all you do in a few years is reverse it so the top 65 years is new. Simple!

You need a knot. Just tie thru holes and be done with it. Braid slip is no fun with a knot. I see a nasty thumb blister in your future if you hook a feisty one.

Yep. That's the reel I have on my baitcasting setup. No need for electrical tape.

I always use mono backing.  I have one reel that I use braid on and the backing has been on there for 11 years.
