Yup, I’ve only been using a bc for a month now and have had two of those. Both times when I’m trying a side arm in a tight spot that I really don’t have the skill for yet. The last one I spent two hours on it then did some cutting. Was able to save enough for my left over spool of power  pro to fill me back up. That was a relief. 

Cool thing about it is you can probably cut out half and respool. I remember when I was 13 I got my first baitcaster before my dad even got one. I can't tell you how many days were cut short because of a massive professional overrun. It was the only bass reel I had. That original Shad Rap, in 1/5 oz. I believe, was murder to cast on my old Daiwa Procaster. I finally had to go down in line size. 

With braid, my "worst" overruns were weird. It wasn't the nest that was bad. I would hit a spot where the line disappears under a LOT of line that isn't even nested. Looks like if you pull too hard on it and it buries the line deep into the spool. I have no idea how this happens on a backlash, but I have stopped using braid just because of this happening on multiple overruns over the last year.

 

Speaking of...what is the best way to cut this out? I've scarred up a new Curado 200 spool cutting out those nests.

Is it it bad if I've had probably 5 or more of those? LOL

I don't really cut it anymore when I get bad backlashes, but when I did, I just took my knife and pulled all the loops up and cut them all together then pull line out.

I had a new reel last year that was giving me fits on backlashing, just couldn't seem to get it dialed in.  My grandson asked if he could use it.  He made one cast and handed it back saying "You're right Papaw".  His birdsnest made mine look simple.

Take the entire spook out from the sideplate and use scissors, not a knife/razor.
