I don't call those bird nests anymore...I call it a professional overrun.

Oh my lol. I've had one almost that bad once with braid. I was using 65lb braid and I DID spend the time to pick it just to pause and regain my composure to keep fishing. Took about 45 minutes and I still had to cut some of the line out. 

Agreed, sometimes you just have to laugh and then cut it out

Had one about that bad with my frog rod not too long ago and actually managed to pick it out. I'm too cheap to just cut up a spool of Smackdown.

Did you hit a tree branch or a shrub when casting?

Was in in the brush working a frog under some trees. Tried to do a little backhand flick and caught a vine right when I released the spool. 

 

The bright side is that reel had Spiderwire that I got on sale for around $8. I’d actually already bought a spool if PP to replace it this winter

Is that an SV spool on that reel?  My Tatula's with the SV spool really reduce the professional over runs. And the drastically reduce the severity of them. Normally just a few spins of the spool. I feel for ya, brother. Been there, done that. I fish a lot of water in La that is FULL of cypress trees. Your back swing on your cast is more important than the direction you're casting to!!

Only with a Daiwa ?

Only time I get those now is when I cast off a bait like a wacky worm.  Does a pro job every time.

Had a bad one like this once at the local park lagoon on my first cast of the day.  Shortest fishing trip of my life.

Had one similar on Saturday.  My jig hit a semi-submerged log on a side cast.

 

Looked at it for a minute, tried once to pull the line out slowly, put it down and picked up my other rod to fish.

 

When I went home I cut the whole mess out and put fresh line on. These times are the reason I visit the clearance isle at Walmart looking for $3 spools of Berkley Big Game.

PART of the problem is that you spooled up with anchor rope.  ;  )

I usually never get a professional overrun.  They usually come when I hit something on the backcast, like a tree branch, or a back seaters rod sticking too far forward.  Sometimes you just know its beyond hope and you just break out the scissors.  I hate it when it's expensive floro, or high priced braid. 

Wait now --- from other threads I've read you apparently "can't backlash a Diawa!"....hmm???

Does look like incredibly heavy braid. Should've made it easier to pick out in some cases, but many times I just shrug and pick up a different rod until I can give it some attention. 

Ouch! Last time I got one that bad was when I went to cast under a tree and caught a bush right at my feet. I just looked at it and burst out laughing. Took about thirty minutes, but I got it out!

Just a bit of advice, go out to the lake/backyard/local park and make the longest cast you can then spool off another 30 ft or so. Next take a small piece of clear tape and place it where the line meets the spool. Next backlash can only go as far as that piece of tape and save you the cost and aggravation of cutting off all that line.

Seems about once a year i hit my trolling motor on an underhanded cast and get a bad one. I keep thinking someone needs to come up with a trolling motor mount that is flush with the bow when deployed. with all the fancy stuff on trolling motors these days that seems like an easy one or maybe I'm the only one this happens to.

It’s just 40 lb braid. Never was fond of the Spiderwire though. 

Had one that bad twice.  Caught another rod in the boat and once caught the trolling motor.  Had another rod to use so just laid that one down until I got home.  Mounted the rod in a vice and used a crochet hook to start pulling out loops.  Then started pulling the end of the line through loops.  Ended up walking the end of the line out the garage door everytime, but did eventually get the back-lash out and saved the braided line.

I get the worst backlashes when I hit something on the cast.  The ones I get while casting are usually pretty easy to get undone. 

I was a guide....I have seen worse and I have picked out worse.  Hundreds of times!!
