Issues with cheap mono

Featured Replies

I spooled up and old baitcaster with the cheap 10 pound mono you can buy at Walmart. It was like $2 for 700yard. It has so much memory it is very difficult to fish. When I cast it out and let it go slack it looks like a slinky!

I hardly ever use mono, always braid, so I’m wondering does the pricier mono have significantly less memory or is this just how mono is?

You get what you pay for...for the most part

I've used nothing but Trilene XL anytime I use mono. From 4# on my UL to 12# on my medium-spinner (smaller crank/jerk baits, inline spinners, Texas Rigs, etc). I've never had a memory issue even though I don't use line conditioner. Of course I replace it every year, more if I have enough breakoffs where it's getting too short.

Sounds like Zebco Omnicast.

You can spray the mono line with silicone lubricant to help release memory from being stored tightly on storage spool. 10 lb mono on a baitcasting reel shouldn't have a lot of memory unless it's old line and cold weather.

Berkley Big Game is inexpensive premium mono.

Big Game doesn't do that, and as a plus is cheap.

I prefer sufix seige myself. I can find it for $9/330yd or often $18/1000yd. Low memory, good knots and fairly abrasion resistant on blue label.

I used that cheap zebco omnicast in 15 lb mono just for a quick light catfish rig that i only use live bait on and it was fine for what i did with it, but i wouldn't use it ever for throwing lures. I barely want it on the live bait rig, but i have just been too lazy to change it lol

Thanks everyone, I think that is pretty conclusive I should pick up some better line sometime.

Even "expensive" mono is pretty cheap compared to other fishing lines. It's what links you to the potential fish of a lifetime, spend the couple extra dollars on some Big Game or other better quality mono.

Even the big game isn't even expensive. Very affordable.

Problems with cheap fishing line?  Imagine that.

All mono and flouro will have some memory, some more than others.  Buy some decent line dude.
