Which one.....Daiwa Steez, Shimano Antares, or Shimano Calcutta Conquest

Recommended Posts

I am looking to get a high end reel and can't make up my mind, especially since no store in 150 miles of me has one of them.  This is a big splurge for me and I have several other setups so this will probably be a new workhorse combo to replace an old one.  I will be paring it with either a St. Croix Legend Elite 7' MH Fast or G Loomis GLX 7' H Fast.  I will be using it for soft plastics T-Rigged and medium sized jigs.

I had the original Steez (returned) and a Calais (sold it) and I liked both for certain things.  The Steez was nice and machined but sort of underwhelming at the price and after a few outings it started to have issues. I liked the Daiwa Zillion I had better.  The Calais was awesome in every way except it was heavy and did not balance as well as I would have liked with the rods I had at that time.  Also, it seemed to scratch easily and it had rust spots on the bottom (not a big deal for me).  I have not fished a Conquest but if I decided to go that route I would use this reel for slower presentations.

Thanks for any advice.

Of those three reels, i would chose the new steez tw.

Probably the A model because it will balance better with the hvy action rod. I have owned all three you mentioned and the only one i kept is the conquest. But, like you, i only use it for slower presentations.

The metanium should also be another option to consider.

Actually, i prefer magnesium reels for my bottom contact rods. To me, they just feel more sensitive.

If you like round reels go with the conquest CTCNQ100 weighs 7.5oz compared to calais 200A at 9.3oz it's a classic

The Bantam mgl 150 is the conquest of the low profile reels weighs 7.6oz

The Antare 70AHG weighs 7.8oz

Any of those three will serve you well and should please you with their awesomeness.

Of those, I would go Steez, but I think I would try a Metanium MGL instead.

Dwight sold me one of his Conquest. I consider all of my reels "favorites", but this is my most favorite!

#2 for me is the Core 50Mg.

What do you use the Conquest for and what rod do you have it on?

If you can't find anywhere local to handle the reels you might want to try tackle warehouse's demo program.(https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/demoprogram.html).  There is a new Antares in the JDM that will be released for sale in in April. It may be some thing to look into through shimano japan, or digitaka. Out of the options you have here in the US I would have to suggest the Steez. It is light weight, smoother than anything else I've fished, and has a broad casting weight range. (regret selling the thing)

I have all of the reels that you have listed.

As a general all around reel the Steez A (or the new Morethan) are hard to beat. The Conquest and Antares are also VERY nice reels, they are just a bit more specific based on the frame size/form and spool size.

Cheers.

I have a Glx 844 and like a 6.5 to 7.5 oz reel on it for balance. I have a wide assortment of reels. High end to basic, both Daiwa and Shimano and ended up with a Curado K on this rod. I will be buying a Bantam MGL to try as well.

Thanks for all the advice.

After all the research and videos, I think I am going with the Steez TW106SV-HL.  I hope it will be good for everything I was looking for in a workhorse reel.

Steez A (or the new morethan) might balance better than Steez SV for the above rods you mentioned
