Catching fish deep during spring?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to learn how to dropshot in deep water, but I'm currently in the Spawn. Is it possible to catch bass deep during the Spawn?

Fish where the fish are not where you want to fish.

What is deep water to you?

Around 30ft. Thanks for the reply

I would say from experience fishing deep, rocky structure lakes for LMB that 90% of the bass population is in less than 25' of water during pre spawn through spawn.

30' is extremely deep between pre spawn to fall unless your lake establishes a firm 30' thermal line during summer, then 30'-35' would be a good depth.

Bass will go up shallower to feed, rarely go deeper.

Not all bass go into pre-spawn/spawn at same time.

Are you planning on fishing 30' or is that just your assessment of deep water?

Last week there was a school busting in the middle of the lake right in the boat lane probably a mile from the nearest shore line. So you never know

I know if you get a little cold snap , that'll back an off a little bit during pre spawn (just happened here) but probably not to 30' . I used a shakyhead to catch em then , but probably could have and should have practiced my dropshot then

I use to try but didnt have much luck . Now I will hit a good point just to see but if I dont hook up right away , I'm heading up the coves .  A lot of it has to do with water clarity and the water around here is not clear .

At least on the Potomac, I look for flats adjacent to deeper water because they warm quickly under the sun and whether they are spawning, getting ready, or just roaming around in the warmer water it seems to be where they will be in general.
