I use chicken livers to get catfish. Works BEAUTIFYLLY!

 

Are mullet just as good? Better? Not good at all?

Are they fresh mullet or frozen, store bought ones?

I find that chicken livers will catch more catfish, but not as many large ones.  I have never used mullet, but here on the west coast we have access to mackerel, both fresh or frozen.  I find that the mackerel catch less fish, but they are substantially larger.

 

My hunch is that smaller catfish are more scavenger-like while larger catfish are more predator-like.  The mullet, mackerel or other chunks of fish may represent a small baitfish.

I tried frozen mullet before with little luck. But it could just be the lakes I fish. Each water system is different. I'm sure catfish closer to coastal waters would probably not turn down mullet.

 

I don't fish for catfish but based on the amount of empty chicken liver containers I see strewn all over the banks of the Upper Potomac River I would say the bait of choice around these parts is very obvious.

I catch a lot of my cats with old dead shrimp that I have leftover from saltwater fishing.

2nd choice is cut pieces of bream.

I used to run trot lines when I was younger, and used the shrimp almost exclusively.

I never caught as many with chicken liver but I never used it as much either.

Same with mullet.

Another thing they love is cut golden shiners!

Never tried mullet but I've used store bought mackerel which is oily and smelly and pretty similar. It worked but not as well as native fish. If you want to catch big ones try live or cut bait locally caught.

The only bad thing about chicken livers here where I live, it's the small stripers that always eats it.
