6.4 California Mohave Earthquake

Recommended Posts

Looks like our forum friends in southern California got a pretty good one today.  From what I hear, there's damage to roads and buildings, but no major injuries.

Nonetheless - check in if you're from that area, just to let us know you're ok!

The earthquake was located in a very low populated area in Mojave desert about 75 to 100 miles north of populated areas, closer to Las Vegas then Los Angeles. The quake was felt in most of SoCal and we thought it was about 3.0 because of the distance.

We are 10 blocks from the ocean on the southern tip of L.A. I didn't feel anything.

I'm half a continent away but I stop feeling stuff quite a while ago.

Sounds like most everyone's OK ~ I'm Glad.

Many Scientist are saying that the San Andreas Fault region is due for a massive earthquake. Let's hope they are wrong since it will be beyond devastating to the West Coast.

Yes, it would be devastating if they started moving East.

Man, for the sake of science, it'd be awesome, but for the sake of people, pure devastation. I keep hearing rumbles about the New Madrid Fault being primed again, but nothing concrete. Heck, if Yellowstone goes, it would be incredible again, from a distance.

I'm glad everyone is ok.

From what I have researched the ''Big One'' (An earthquake of 8.0 or greater) will happen in California sometime in the future but Seismologist cannot 100% predict when exactly it will happen. One Seismologist says there is a 1 in 20 chance (unlikely it will happen) California will have another +6.0 earthquake in the next couple days. With that said it would be best to have enough stored bottled water and food for at least 2 weeks along with camping gear. It will most likely not be needed but it is better to be safe than sorry.  That I learned by living through several hurricanes that hit my area throughout the years. It is only a matter of time before another category 5 hurricane hits South Florida and you can bet I will do my best to prepare for it.

30 minutes ago at 8:19 we had another quake 6.9 lasting longer and definitely got my attention this time. Same isolated desert area so I don't expect a lot of damage but a lot more rattled nerves!

d**n bud. Hope y'all steer clear of a big one. 6.9 is still sizeable, I guess.

CalTech just increased the magnitude to 7.1 and that is a major quake.

This event felt like a 5 where I am and lasted at least 3 times longer then the initial 6.4 fore shock that felt like a 3.

The one that killed 200,000~ people in Haiti was a 7.0. American infrastructure and government building codes, as well as this being out in the desert, is saving the day.

My Son who lives in Orange County, had books and other items fly off the shelves..Thankfully nothing was damaged. At our house, my wife said the house which was built in 1927 shook pretty good, I wasn't home, about 12 miles to the east, I felt nada. Hope all is well for all you cali folks out there.

I'm happy I live in Florida, the worst things that can happen are hurricanes, and the La Palma (Canary Island) mega tsunami... hang on, that's not so good :-) Come to think of it, considering the even remote possibility of the Yellowstone super volcano going off, there's really no safe place to live in the U.S. so Carpe Diem :-)
