I was wrapping up my day when I encountered some thick milfoil. I didn't spend much time  there but I did toss a frog for a few minutes. This morning I was watching a video of Seth feider and he was flipping the grass mats and showing how its done. My question is when to choose one or the other as my first approach.

I usually start with the frog.  Its easy to cover a lot of water in just a few minutes and get a feel for what the fish are doing.  While throwing it, I'll look for bait and other surface activity, If i don't see much happening on the surface, I usually won't stick with the frog for long.  From my experience, if the fish want the frog, you usually know within the first few minutes.  At least that's how it goes for me, I'm not a patient frog fishermen, if I throw the frog for 10-15 minutes and don't get bit, I'm putting it down for something else.

When I'm approaching the weeds, i'll be throwing the frog along the outside edges and in or around some holes in the mats closer to the edge.

 

If no takers, I'll move into the heavier stuff to flip

 

I have never just started flipping in the middle of the dense mats, its always hit the edges as I creep closer.

Pretty much it right there is?

Cover water and distance on high percentage areas with the frog then move in with the punching rig.

You always ask them to come up. But, you often have to go in and get them.
