As some of you may know from my previous posts, fishing for me has been terrible since I moved to the SC Upstate region. But because of a terrible series of personal events I am back in the SC Lowcountry this week.

 

On a personal level, today was one of the worst days of my life (and I prefer to keep that private as it is a sensitive family matter). I’m staying with my parents while back in town and on the way back to their place I needed some alone time to gather myself and so I stopped at one of my favorite lagoons. I was straight retrieving a green pumpkin chatterbait with a split tail trailer and landed a decent 3 pounder. It was nice to finally catch something again.

 

About half an hour later I was throwing a blue and black chatterbait with a dark blue craw trailer that had lighter blue claws. This time I was fishing it using the lift and drop and on the drop I felt something grab it. As soon as Iset the hook she began moving hard. She tried to roll and breach but from my high bank elevation I could position the rod tip below my feet and keep her down. But I caught a glimpse and felt her fight and knew she was a good size. But would it be my PB?

 

It wasn’t, but she still tipped the scales at 6.1 pounds and for a few brief moments I could put my most awful day aside. It was what I needed at that moment. I thank God for giving me that brief respite. It’s times like this when I realize what fishing means to me.

 

I tried to take a picture but short arms and big fish mean bad selfies.

I managed to fish for a few hours today before heading home. I caught only two bass both under two pounds.

 

But the interesting thing was that I caught a catfish on a Pop-R of all things. A hungry catfish will hit just about anything.

Was it fun getting the trebles out!!

Luckily it was a one lip hook on the front and a belly hook in the back. But I know what you mean - it's a pain when a catfish gets the trebles hooked inside on the bottom and the top.

Glad you found comfort in something you love doing. 

Troubles come and go and fishing is always an excellent way to recoup. 

Did the gators let you know how much they missed you?

YES! On day 2 there were two of them that came right up to greet me.

 

I've come to the conclusion I'd rather have good fishing and gators rather than poor fishing and no gators.

Hopefully you will get things figured out and the fishing will get better for you when you go back home.

My theory is:

If I see gators around then I will be fishing there just at a safe distance.

 

Down south we have gators in almost every body of water but one thing is certain; a gator will not hang around an area that doesn't have a steady food source.
