Reel for Crankbaits

Featured Replies

Is 21 ipt to slow for deep divers? If not can I throw magnum squarebills like the KVD 4.0 and up? All this is being thrown on a 7’6 mh mf rod. If to slow give suggestions for faster reals like that go 23 to 25 ipt. Is it fine to throw magnums on slow reels?

What is your gear ratio?

Most bass fishermen use baitcasters when fishing crankbaits. I prefer using spinning reels and have caught lots of big fish that way. Choose the reel you feel most comfortable with.

ipt?  Inches Per Turn?

5.1:1 is a decent gear ratio for big-bill crankbaits.  High gear ratio reels will work you to death.

Yup.

That gear ratio will work well for crankbaits.

21ipt is on the slower side but that means you can fish it a little bit faster as opposed to 23ipt. No reason that should be "too slow". I still use my 6.3:1, 26.1 ipt reels and just fish them slower.

My reel is 6.3:1 , 26.8 IPT  This is mated with a FR705CB Also use it for jerk baits.

Where does everyone get the IPT specs from?

I wouldn't get too hung up on IPT.  I wouldn't use a super fast reel with crankbaits but as long as you know the bait and reel, you should be able to judge how fast turn the handle.  I use anything from a 5.x:1 to a 7.x:1.

I measure mine... pull off a length of line (30' or so), mark the line at the rod tip, 5 turns of the reel handle and mark the line at the rod tip again, distance between marks divided by 5.

I get mine from the mfg specs

The lews bb1 is specific made for crankin. It lacks a anti-reverse like the original. This increases casting distance and the ability to feel what your plug is doing. The ipt is 21" which is optimum for resistance baits. For shallower cranks and traps a 6:1 reel is often more effecient. You don't really need that much torque up shallow. Larger shallow plugs like a kvd 4.0 squarelip may be easier to reel with a 5:1 gearing. The only time a 7:1 would really be needed is for maybe ripping or burning lipless crankbait over grass or other cover and flats.
