Like the title says, looking for a place to go in Wisconsin for a father/son fishing trip.   Coming from outside Chicago and hoping to find something within a 6 hour drive.   All thoughts are appreciated 

Wow, there are a lot of good lakes in S.E Wisconsin. I pretty much fish them all. Geneva, Delavan, Browns Nagawicka, Powers, Como, Beulah, Elizabeth. Just to name a few. I assume for bass fishing.

6 hours North of Chicago bass fishing is where I spend at least 6 weeks every year. You give little details about when you are going, if you have your own boat, how long you want to stay or what kind of accommodations you might be looking for. If it was me, I’d start at the Minocqua chamber of commerce web site. There are literally hundreds of lakes within an hours drive of there, most of which have lots of large and smallmouth bass, that see very little fishing pressure. You can get a cabin on a lake and fish the same lake every day, or stay in a motel and fish 1-5 lakes every day. Soooo many possibilities. The town has lots of restaurants if you don’t want to cook, and plenty of grocery stores if you do. 

If you head up to Northern WI you'll find plenty of lakes to fish.  Just find a cabin to rent up there and you can fish a couple different lakes each day.  It's a beautiful area, I recommend it.

Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay

 

Go to Lacrosse, WI and fish the Mississippi River.  Between Pools 7 and 8 you can have aa blast!

* we do not have a boat BUT wll haul a couple of kayaks

* there are 5 father/sons (age 14) and we ususally VRBO a house on a lake

* ideally looking for something where we have lots of space as the boys still like to run around with air soft guns

I've been researching and there are tons of lakes to consider.  Ideally looking for the most active bass fishery.

You can't go wrong with the Mississippi River if you want active bass fishing.  You can focus on largemouth or smallmouth.  You can fish near the main channel, wing dams, sloughs, back waters, rock piles, rocky shores, sand bars, trees and it's a frog fishing mecca.

 

There are a lot of great places to stay along the river as well.  You can rent a cabin or do an Airbnb.  It's an awesome area.

Buddy of mine found a place on Castle Rock Lake.  Any thoughts on the fishing there?

Little green lake is a sleeper. Lots of quality fish there. 

Castle Rock is not really known for bass. Most guys fish it for musky, and walleye. That being said, the Wisconsin river system has a real good summertime smallmouth bite, albeit the size is generally small. I haven't fished Castle Rock, but have spent time fishing both the upper and lower Dells as well as Lake Wisconsin, which are the 3 bodies of water just south of Castle Rock on the river. I like to use lead heads and Gulp minnows and bounce jigs off the shelves on the steep walls.
