double fluke rig

Featured Replies

I am familiar with fishing the double fluke rig weightless. Will this rig still function correctly if I use 2 light weight jig heads rather than using it weightless? If not, would it still function correctly if I use a jig head for the bottom one?

no reason why not, but I use it in the top 4 feet of the water column.

I have added swivels or a heavier hook to get it down deeper, but like to pause mine.

It might work, but I don’t like it. I think weight on the head would kill swimming and gliding action. Jig head would also pull the fluke down too fast. I’d rather use bigger swivel or FC if I wanna fish it deep.

If you want Fluke sink faster, try D-Shad or Caffeine Shad.

i was thinking to do a double fluke rig with two 1/64 oz jig heads, to give me a little extra casting weight, as well as double rigging. I would be using it in a bit of a current, those light jig heads really float around quite a bit, im now thinking the turbulence of the water may tangle it.

If in the current adding weight might help. You can try belly weight EWG hook but gonna be hard to find such that light weight, or add split shot about a foot in the front. I use 1/16oz VMC drop dead in spring, or add split shot to regular hook when want it to sink faster. This way I can still maintain left to right action and gliding action when I twist rod tip.

It will work with jigheads.  In fact, double flukes (or grubs) on 1/8 to 1/4 oz heads are very popular among saltwater speckled trout fishermen.  They sell them pre-rigged in all the tackle shops on OBX and elsewhere.  Google "double speck rig" and you can see pics, and also videos on how to tie them up.

I have used the double fluke rig a few times and never caught a fish with it. I had to use a 1/16 ounce bullet weight on the one that was sliding on the main line to get it to cast good. Hope your luck is better than mine.

crappie anglers do it all the time.

Are we talking Super Fluke, Jr Fluke, Regular Fluke or Tiny Fluke here? When ppl say fishing Fluke for bass, I always think Super Fluke and Jr. Fluke, (I can’t imagine others to be as crazy as me to use Regular Fluke or Tiny Fluke for bass.

If you have to add weight to be able to cast further even with Double Rig( I think you use the wrong gears here). Adding weight to Fluke for me is to fish different depth or different action altogether. Yes I have add weight on the head (1/16 or 1/8 wacky hook?) but that when I hopped Fluke on bottom around point/drop.

Only way to find out is to try it, I’ve never used it that way but I have a feeling it wouldn’t be the same and would lose the glide and be less erratic. You’d probably be better off putting weight in front of the leaders above the swivel if you’re trying to get it deeper.

I recommend inserting a small nail weight into the heads of the flukes, right behind the eye of the hook. This may not be clear without a photo but screw in the nail weight from where the hook pocket it is, into the head. I do this to have flukes run a little deeper, so i don’t see why it wouldn’t work on a double fluke rig. I usually use 1/32 or 1/16 (1/16 are a little harder to fit) VMC Neko Weights.

putting split shot on the hook had crossed my mind as well, and looks like it works, awesome idea.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. I suppose I should have labeled it donkey rig rather than double fluke rig as my intention was to fish two of the tiny gulp minnows, on a donkey rig, or double fluke rig setup.....it is in current, and I find that the 1/64 oz jigheads are so light, with such a small plastic on there, the things act nearly weightless in the water. Wont know until I try, just gonna have to give it a go and see what happens but also learned quite a bit from the suggestions in this thread. Targeting small bass and bluegill in my micro fishing spot. I think the chances are high to catch two at once with this setup.

the idea of using a carolina keeper a bit above the swivel and then a bullet weight above that has crossed my mind as well. Sounds like your suggesting split shot though?

You should be able to do donkey rig with gulp minnow, I would use 1/32oz jig head instead or at least on bottom, especially in current.
In the video, I used two 1/32oz tube jig, I left about 1-1.5’ for bottoms one and add bobbers stopper above the two swivels, so the top one can follow the bottom one.

Another way to rig and if you want glide and left to right action then add a few bb split shot above both swivels. Twists up a few time and let it fall. I use #2 Gamakatsu EWG this way (make sure to rig the hook straight in the middle).

Goto 1:30 minute to see the double rig tiny fluke (without weight)

I am using the Super Flukes and throwing them on a spinning rod. The one on the swivel that slides on the main line will not cast as far as the one tied to the swivel on the main line. That is why the need for a little bit of weight to get it out there with the other one.

Put a tiny split shot above the front baits swivel and they’ll cast more like one unit and stay closer together

How long the line you have on that rig? I only use 8-12” on shot one and 15-24” for the main one. I add bobbers stopper about 2-3” above both swivels so the short one doesn’t fly around by itself. I some time rig different size. Jr. on shot and Super on main.

Added: the double rig super fluke would put weight almost 3/4oz on you spinning, you might try Super Fluke Jr. instead.

Thanks for the tip. Never thought about doing that.

I use about a 12" leader on the main line and about 18" one the one that slides on the main line.
