2020 new Shimano reel release?

Featured Replies

I am looking at purchasing a new Shimano bait caster somewhere in the  curado-chronarch price range. I know the curado K is 2 years old. When will they release a new reel in this price range?

The 200 sized Curado K likely won't be replaced for at least another year. However, you will likely see a new smaller 70 sized one very soon.

If you're comfortable ordering from Japan, the Scorpion MGL is a nice upgrade over the Curado K. They're currently sitting at $179 on JapanLureShop.

I ordered one (Scorpion MGL) for $155 about 3 weeks ago from a different site. Not sure what the current exchange rate is currently, but at $155 that's a tough reel to beat. I can't check it right now, the site is blocked at work.

I was just about to make a thread asking this very question.:D

The K is too heavy for my taste but I am keeping my fingers crossed for something new in the 70 size. In the meantime I couldn't resist and broke down and bought a 71hg yesterday.

Do you find the 70 size reel to hold enough line?

For pitching to brush or bombing swim baits? Gonna spool it up with 30lb braid, 12lb mono or 20lb fluoro?

@jbsoonerfan I wouldn’t be cranking with it but would still like to make a full cast if necessary

I have thrown a POP Max on a Scorpion 70 with 40 lb Sufix 832 and it was about as much as I would want to do with it. I'm not a world class caster like some of the guys on here who could obviously spool it, but I would say it is good enough to throw most baits. I prefer the 70 size reels for pitching to cover or making short casts to specific targets.

That's pretty nifty.  I like that little reel, not sure that it would be my first choice for cranking, but for those that want to, there's a solution.  I would add a Metanium handle too.  I know some guys just put bearings in the handle, but I think I've just gotten spoiled by the longer handles that come with reels these days.  https://tackletrap.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=5395

Nice! Anymore info?

I’m expecting a new 70 this year as well. Not only is this about the right time in the “cycle”...apparently, dealers have been dumping their 70s. Although, the latter is a bit less convincing since I feel like we would have SOME information at this point if the dealers knew something.

The only evidence “against” a new curado 70 is the sheer number of slx models that have been released. I have an slx, an slx xt and an slx mgl....they’re very, very curado 70-like. The mgl and (to a lesser extent) the xt cut into that market a little bit.

All of that aside, a k series curado 70 would be mind-blowing for me. The only reels that rival my aldebarans in comfort and general usability are the curado 70s...to my hands at least.

I have this gear set in one of my 70's I like the low ratio. The reel holds 200' of 16# sniper fc plenty for my use.

According to a recent podcast I heard that the new one will be under $200

I have not heard of any new shimano reels being released in the $200 price range. It would be awesome to have a 70 series curado I though.

why is the scorp mcl better than the k?

It's already being sold and it is $420.

I better cancel my preorder then if you think the 2020 Metanium will be under $200 ?

Retail price is $420. Stop spreading false info.

Bamtam1 at Shimano says no new 70 is coming.  Same reel.  Also curious, since the SLX MGL is a JDM reel, did you order it from Japan?
