I currently only have a Fury 3 25p for my 2014 Cougar FTD.  Getting it reworked to try to get a "little" more hole shot out of it.  I wish to get a spare prop to 

have in the boat in case a rock or shoal should jump out in front of my boat. 

 

Question: When it comes to getting another prop does it make any sense in looking used or is it best to just go new? Any rules of thumb that one should follow?

 

 

The reason I ask is because I see a lot of chatter on some blogs about boaters having multiple props,  getting rid of, looking to swap and so forth. 

I just dont know if buying used can be dangerous (like buying a used engine).  Are their any outfits that specilize in used props. Was possibly thinking of

trying a Fury 4 but not sure of what pitch. 

 

I’ve seen used props for sale at the shops where props are rebuilt. I wouldn’t hesitate in buying a used one at my prop shop.

You could just get an aluminum prop as your spare.  They are much cheaper than SS and if its just being used as a spare. 

My spare prop is SS, but only because I replaced with a new prop a couple years back and kept my old one as a spare.

I think if your only using it as a spare, it doesn't have to be brand new.  It only has to get you back to the launch.

Why not buy used? A spare is only that.

The 4 blade prop will improve your hole shot, adding cup to your 3 blade may improve bow lift depending on how the boat is set up. In general a 24P 4 blade is equal in rpm's to a 25P 3 blade. Everything depends on weight distribution, Jack plate setting and rpm's currently being achieve.

Used props are ok from a reputable source, could have weak welded blade or poor hub clutch? Aluminum prop is a lot lighter to store in the boat for a spare.

I bought a used SS prop from the prop shop who repaired an aluminum I bent up pretty bad and they even put a cup on the blades for me and guaranteed the prop.  Runs like a dream.  A whole lot cheaper than a new prop.
