Spinning Rod Jerkbaits-What’s Your Setup?

Featured Replies

I believe I am in the minority by throwing jerkbaits on spinning gear as it seems most people are throwing them on baitcasters nowadays. I would like to hear some discussion about what set ups you use from rods, reels and ratios to lines and leaders if applicable. Having recently picked up some bigger pointers which may be too big for my spinning rod (1/4-1/2 rating) I was also curious about setups for anyone who throws heavier jerks like 5/8 to 1 ounce.

I throw smaller jerkbaits on 7' med or medium light rods with a 2000/2500 spinning reel. Generally I'm using 8 pound Silver thread copolymer.

Any decent spinning reel-most of mine were in the 50-75 dollar range will be fine. Ratios don't matter because you let the lure sit. A good drag is far more important.

I use spinning gear to present jerkbaits at least half the time I fish them; which is often early & late season especially.

Been doing so for a long time and it works for me.

I like medium action sticks usually in the 6'10" range but will use a a 7'4" to get extra distance on a cast.

Always 10lb -15 lb braid & a 8--10 lb mono leader.

That said, for baits over 1/2 oz, I'm usually using revolving spool tackle.

Spinning gear & a jerkbait accounted for my last fish of the season in 2019

That's a real bruiser, great way to end the year, great lakes?. I tried throwing some jerks on casting gear last year (with mono) and it just didn't feel right, it may have been the line, I'm so used to the feel of braid with jerks, it just felt disconnected or something. The snapping action felt unnatural as well and I just couldn't get used to it. Maybe I'll give it another shot with some fluoro this time.

Thanks ~ This was an inland lake in northern lower Michigan.

 When presenting jerkbaits is in cooler to cold water, perhaps consider less of a 'snap' and more of a slow pull;

with a pause of course.

It's something I got from this video and it's been pretty killer for me.

I throw jerkbaits on both baitcasting and spinning reels. I usually throw the smaller jerkbaits on spinning tackle. My combo consists of a black 6'8" med cumara rod and stradic 1000FL with 10 lbs braid. I'll throw smaller x-raps and other light weight jerkbaits on it. I also use this combo for smaller 1/4 oz or less blade baits.

I'm a spinning guy myself as well for jerkbaits.  6'6 M for shallower jerks and 7' mh for deeper jerks.

Line- have used a bunch of different types and have not really found a preference but do not like straight braid.

Mainly using Megabass or Rapalas

6' 8" M/F with 8lb copolymer. I mainly use it for smaller baits but I'll use it to get my baits down deeper as well. It's the setup I used to catch my PB smallmouth last spring.

I throw jerkbaits on casting and spinning gear my spinning set up is a 7’ medium Daiwa tatula rod with a Tatula 3000 CHX with 10lb yellow braid with a 10lb copoly leader.

Switching back to spinning gear for jerkbaits, for me I think it's better casting distance, twitching/jerking is more controlled and comfortable on my wrist. M/F for 3/8oz or <100mm and MF/F for 1/2oz or >100mm.

I use GLX 822 syr and NRX 852s JWR both with 20lb Smackdown or 10lb 832 with an 8lb floro leader. Works well for me
