Me and a buddy where out cast netting. We caught around a 2-3 inch bass in a pond. When we released it it seemed fine but after a little while he was upside down. His gills are still moving and he is fluttering his tail. Is there any way we can save this bass or is he a goner?

Bass rollover from stress or over expanded air bladder. In this situation it's more then likely over stressed.

Sounds like shock...it's a 50/50 chance he'll recover - nothing really to be done except maybe not do cast netting anymore.

If he floated up after being released, likely didn't survive. Most bass that size don't anyways though.

I caught a pretty large perch this summer, and after releasing it, it floated upside down. My son jumped in and helped him to deeper water and eventually he turned right side up and swam away. In this case, I would say it was an overstressed fish.

I know this one, it’s the Same thing my dog did, you gotta rub it’s belly, they LOVE that!
