More Diversity in Bass Lures

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I've noticed that I've become very one dimensional in my bass fishing.

I tend to toss my top 4-5 lures and if there are no takers, I become inpatient/ticked!

My goal this season is to step out of my comfort zone and toss some lures that I normally don't, master them, and hopefully get production from them.

Here are some lures and tactics I'm going to really work this season:

1. Jerk Baits, namely Lucky Craft Lightning Pointer 98XR & Flash Pointer 115 - BTW...In the Lucky Craft Pointer Jerkbaits...what size is most productive...65, 78, 100 or 115?

2. Jig & Eel around the Dams & Bass Jigs dressed with pork/plastic trailers around structure, drop-offs, and shallow water.

3. Mepps #4 & #5 Agila various colors.

4. Also going to use some old school tactics with weightless live big minnows & nightcrawlers injected with air.

I'd like to get your feedback/experience/tips if you don't mind.

Thanks,

BTW...Lunkerhunt PHANTOM SPIDER lure---DOES IT WORK??

My tacklebox is very diverse - as per California law.

I can't legally discriminate on the lure's religion or political leanings, and I don't even wanna know their sexual orientation. I have lures of every color - they all matter, even the rainbow ones. And they all came with a Prop 65 warning because according to California, they cause cancer.

We also can't call them "jerk" baits here because someone may get their feelings hurt - we call them "anger-prone, yet still accepted" baits. I still call them jerk baits though.

Anyways, catching with a jerk bait, a jig and a stick worm are on my list this year as I have yet to do any of them (I'm still pretty new).

Yikes man!!

That sounds akin to bondage...folks shouldn't be so easily offended...we're talking fishing here!??

Appreciate the feedback...I've got a son, grand-kids and other kinfolks in Cali!

Good deal. Go beyond your comfort zone. Think outside of the box some. Don’t forget the good old rubber worms. A lot of variations, force yourself to fish slow.

I'm all for diversity in my fishing lures, but the more ethnic ones tend to go into the collection side rather than the use now side of the collection.   For example, Salmo hard bait are made in Poland, and they have some very unique shapes & actions.   Those are collectors items - I don't actually fish with them.  Rapala baits, made in Finland are pretty common, but for a while they manufactured part of their line in Ireland, and some of those baits are considered collectable.

A few years ago my younger sister went to Ireland, and she took $200 with her (of my money).  She was to go into a tackle shop, the first one she saw, and spend in money on " baits that the clerks said worked in Ireland "  She had a couple of male Irish musicians go with her, so I don't think she got fooled too bad, but I got an interesting collection of in-line spinners, made in Ireland, Scotland, Italy ( She was specifically told to not buy anything that said Mepps on the package. )

Still on the subject of diversity I'm pretty sure that I could easily import multiple thousands of dollars of Japanese baits if my wallet would only allow it.   They seem to have lots of cool stuff to choose from.

Many of the Pradco baits are made in various places in central & South America.

This seems to be a good fishing collection goal, i.e. how many different countries are represented in the various baits that I own?  Wonder what the record is?

What I do when I want to fish plastics is rotate the jika rig, tokyo rig, free rig, carolina rig, texas rig, etc, switching baits on each one type of rig. It'll keep you busy.

What is your number 1 jerkbait?

I am very diverse with my lures.  All my lures have female names except Yum Wooly Bullies (William) and Chatter baits.  (Can't say what I call them, but it's male).

Couldn't resist.  Forgive me.

Geez, I forget what era we live in...I'll factor that in when I post other topics.

Perhaps I should have used terms like, "a more well rounded angler, a broader skill-set, or not so one dimensional!"??

I was under the impression that the only fishing lures that work in 2020 are vision 110, jackhammer, Ned rig, and whopper plopper...........

lol i know we've talked about it before the jackhammer is such a waste of money. they eat the original just as well. whopper ploppers suck!

While I do believe in diversity, I don't maintain quotas.  And equality in opportunity does not equal equality in outcome.

Wait, what are we talking about here?

Diversity is nice but don't get crazy. You'll end up with a bunch of stuff you don't use and regret buying. Ask me how I know, lol.

I'm really diverse when it comes to KVD 1.0's!

Perhaps I need counseling...

Sorry I couldn't resist! No offense intended, that second beer went to my head ;)
