I've got two Dobyn's A fury for spinn casting and the Champion m/h Glass on a bait setup. The Fury is okay. But that Champion glass rod is wonderful. I use it whenever I can.

Thanks guys for all the responses.  If I ever get the chance to see and handle a Dobyn's I'll try one out.

I would look at the classifieds, more Dobyns pop up consistently than any other brand it seems and often in lots or bunches, people seem to put up more than one of their dobyns for sale, you can grab them for real cheap then and try one out and see if you like it.

 

Fish a St. Croix and Dobyns heavily for a year and see which one holds up the best as far as fit and finish and judge for yourself.

I was a St Croix guy for a while and then started branching out to other brands a few years ago.  I bought a bunch of dobyns rods last year and I really like them.  Are they better or worse than the St. croix rods in the same price range, not sure but they are both good rods for the money.  I have St croix rage, avid and mojo rods and Dobyns Fury series.

They're nice considering they can often be had at 20% off or more, but I think it will depend on what your use to using and what you plan to use them for. As much as I like them I wouldn't pay retail on one. If sensitivity was top priority and I wanting the best bang-for-buck <$200 rod I'd look at St.Croix, Daiwa, Cashion, Falcon or a few others. Dobyns definitely shines in balance & customer service though.

In general I would say St Croix rods up to legend tournament series will be heavier than Dobyns and more tip heavy. I don’t have experience with St Croix above LTB. I have had both companies rods from premier- legend and Dobyns from Fury-champion, and that what I personally have experienced.

I think St. Croix currently makes better rods. The Mojo Bass is where I think all the tip heaviness Claims come from. I’d take a dobyns over a mojo any day.

 

Nothing wrong with dobyns, but to my tastes, I have a few St. Croix rods in the $100-$200 range, that I’d choose over dobyns, but that’s just my preference.

Croix isnt offering blanks for sale right now, but prior to that I already stopped using them simply because I couldnt afford to. With the Mojo line added to the SC-III offerings there is a lot of variety to choose from. The Avid line was pretty limited in selection. Post a review once you've had a chance to try out the new Mojo, I think a lot of guys will be interested.

I believe SC sells their blanks under the Rod Geeks banner.

@bogfrog, I agree with you on the new Mojo.  I bought a 6'8" MXF "Wacky" model for my teenage son and was very impressed with it.  I normally use Legend Series rods but have been VERY pleased with the new Mojo Bass series.
