New GLX MBR 783c questions

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

I am considering to buy a GLX 783c MBR (2017 model) as an all-round bank fishing stick, since it is hard to source locally to try and feel, I am wondering if you guys have any experience about it?

1. Is it tip heavy when paired up with a shimano metanium MGL? I do jigging a lot, and afraid of being weared out.

2. Is the grip more comfortable than NRX if the hand is not very big?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I have the old 783C GLX (maybe 15 years ago).  To this day, it is one of my favorite rods.  To me it's just perfect in about every way.  Now as far as how it compares to the newer versions, I have no clue.  The old version is not tip heavy at all.  It will of course depend on which reel you put with it and the Met MGL would be just fine.  I would say the 783 is one of the most versatile rods Loomis makes but my favorite use for this rod would be jerkbaits.  It has a soft tip and the shorter length works well for Lucky Craft Pointers and Vision 110 (these a little heavy though).

I also have a new NRX 853C and it's more sensitive for sure but not quite as versatile.  I really love it but I don't seem to have the same connection to this rod as I do the 783C.   It is better for jigs and has quicker hook sets.  I kind of wish they had something close to the 783 in the NRX line.

Hi Kevin. Wellcome to BR!

1) I have a GLX 783c MBR I bought in 2018. It's a great all-around rod. Very light and definitely not tip heavy. I don't have a Metanium MGL, but I have used it with a Curado 70 which is only 0.3 oz heavier and it balances well. I totally understand about not being able to see it in person. It's hard to find more expensive rods in stores these days. My local Cabela's had the EX version of the 783c MBR in stock so I went to check it out to get an idea. I liked the way that felt so I took a chance and ordered the GLX from the Cabela's website. The handle is the similar but the blank, guides, and finish are much better.

2) Sorry I don't have a NRX to compare with.

I say go for it!

I have a new model 783c and loved it as an all-around bank rod.  The sensitivity is outstanding and the power/taper balance of the MBR rods make them insanely versatile.

However, I never came around liking the ergonomics of the rod. I find the handle to be too long for any kind of tip down or twitching retrieve, which is a shame as the rod is otherwise excellent for flukes and trickworms.  I would gladly trade an inch and a half off the butt added back to the working end. I’m also not a big fan of the reel seat, only a very narrow set of the eight or so different reel body-styles I’ve tried on it feel it all comfortable for me, the usual culprit is that my finger is pushed into the lip of the locking collar.

The blank is so good that I just dealt with it until this fall when I picked up a Poison Adrena 611M+.  It’s very close and power/taper to the 783c but I find it to be vastly more comfortable and maybe even a little more sensitive.
